Dear Families,
Happy New Year to You and Those You Love!!! I trust you had a very relaxing vacation with wonderful, memory making moments. I pray 2012 will be a great year of rich blessings for you and your family. We are very excited to begin the second half of our year. Lots of curriculum and many standards will be covered in the next few months and you will see incredible growth in your child.
LANGUAGE ARTS – First and Second Graders continue working on vocabulary that comes home. It is so beneficial to your child and his/her progress. Book bags that went home on Dec. 12th are due Friday, Jan. 13th. Second Grade homework that went home on Dec. 12th is due Jan. 13th.
MATH – First Graders will begin working on Chapter 5, a place value unit. This is always a very challenging unit of study for some, particularly if number sense is not well developed. Please continue to review counting and writing to 100 by 2′s, 5′s, and 10′s, if your child still struggles with this. Also, practice counting by 10′s starting at 5.We will also be working on 10 more than and 10 less than. Second Graders will begin Chapter 7, a unit on Geometry, Fractions and Probability. Remember to faithfully do 4 minute math drills at home.
SOCIAL SCIENCE - First Grade will begin Unit 5, All About People and Second Grade will start Unit 1, Families Now and Long Ago, Both grades will also focus on the contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. and what God’s Word says about discrimination.
BIBLE - We will study the life of Samuel, focusing on Hannah’s promise to God and what the words “Here am I Lord, send me” mean to us today.. Also, beginning this Friday, Jan. 13th, First Graders will begin writing their Bible Verses. No points are taken off for words that are not spelled correctly. Second Graders have been writing their verses all year and have done a great job. This is great practice for using high frequency words and sentence structure in writing. It will be helpful for your child to practice writing the verse at home as well, at least one time during the week.
SCIENCE -
We will continue our unit on Weather and Seasons.
We will also be starting a unit on Health and Nutrition. We will be studying the four food groups and what constitutes healthy eating. If you have any magazines with pictures of food items in them that we could use to cut out and categorize, please send with your child. Many thanks! I would also like to invite any parent who is in the health or medical field to come and share with the children about their professions. Let me know if you would be willing to come and share with us. The children are so proud when mom or dad or grandma or grandpa come to our classroom and share.
PEACH BLOSSOM - You have received the requirements for Peach Blossom before Christmas break. I have also included the handout in Monday’s take home packet, as well as tips for learning your selection.. Your child needs to choose a poem, and send it to school by Fri., Jan. 13th. I received several before Christmas vacation. Your child should practice his/her poem a few minutes each day. We will also practice at school. Our classroom evaluations will take place on Friday, Jan. 20th.
