Dear Families,
Thank you for the wonderful conferences. It’s exciting to partner with you, educating your child to become a life long learner who will love God, and further His Kingdom!
Since the children will be loaded with Valentines on Tuesday, I sent home the work envelope home on Friday instead of today.
HELP - This is a request to all who have taken pictures of our class this year.I would appreciate it if you could put them on a CD and send it to school. This would include all our field trips, as well as the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs and parties. We are in need of pictures for our Yearbook, which is prepared online. Many thanks!
LANGUAGE ARTS – First Graders, continue working on vocabulary that comes home. We are still concentrating on long vowels. This begins to really open up lots of reading opportunities and you will notice less pre-learned vocabulary, as the children will now have the skills to blend many new words. As you read with your child, begin to ask them what is happening at the beginning, middle and the end of the story, as well as the characters, setting, problem and solution in their stories. Book bags are due every Friday. Second Graders have begun a Literature Study on Andi’s Pony Trouble. We will being doing some follow through work with vocabulary and questions as we move from chapter to chapter.
HERITAGE DOLL AND SPEECH INFO - Second Graders will be receiving a schedule for speeches in the February 21st work envelope. They will be during the week of March 19-23. This will take the place of a book project for the month of March.
BIBLE – We will be studying Solomon.
MATH – First Graders are working on counting money.. Continue throwing change out on the table ( quarters, dimes, pennies and nickels) and have your child practice counting it, beginning with the coin that is the most valuable. This skill takes a lot of practice for some. We will also practice at school. Please continue to review counting and writing to 100 by 2′s, 5′s, and 10′s, if your child still struggles with this. We are also beginning to count by 2′s starting with the odd numbers. Also, practice counting by 10′s starting at 5. Remember to faithfully do a 4 minute math drill at home. Facts to addition and subtraction are the standards for first grade. Second Graders are on a unit on Multiplication and Division. They are so enjoying this unit and surprising themselves how easy multiplication seems. We started division this week and that kind of took the wind out of their sails!!! Knowing the multiplication facts of 2′s, 3′s, and 5′s is really helpful. We will continue with this concept this week as well. The homework from last Friday is on division. Please check your child’s work for accuracy. In Math drills, Second Graders should be on subtraction to 20.
FIVE – A DAY - Both grades will begin reviewing Math and Language skills in a booklet called Five -A- Day. There are five problems in both Math and Language for each day of the week. These are done independently. The children will circle in red the ones they miss and correct them. We discuss these together as a class to make our corrections. Please note the kinds of mistakes your child is making as this will be beneficial to you as you work with them. You will see the first Five-A Day in the envelopes on Feb. 21st.
SOCIAL SCIENCE - First Graders have begun Chapter 2, “Where People Live”, as well as a unit on Mapping. We are also be learning what country we live in, the state, and the city, as well as the seven continents. Second Graders have begun,”People Make a Difference”. Both grades will also focus on the contributions of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington this month..
SCIENCE - February is Dental Health month. We will do a unit on”The Care of Our Teeth,” beginning Feb. 15th.

VALENTINE’S PARTY - We will celebrate on Tuesday, Feb. 14th. Our party will be from 1:00 – 2:30. The children will exchange valentines with one another. Thank you to those who have brought something for our party.
TRANSITION DAY- Second Graders will be going to People’s Campus on Friday, Feb. 17th. We will travel by bus, leaving at 11:45 AM. The children will get a “flavor” of what 3rd grade will be like. Hopefully, this will help alleviate some of the anxieties of leaving NE Campus and going to the BIG campus. We will be visiting the classroom, doing a project and attending a We Got the Beat Assembly. It should be a fun time. All are invited. If you are not attending you will meet your child at People’s Campus at 3:00 PM as we will NOT be coming back to NE.
FIELD TRIP - Second Graders will be going on a tour of Save Mart Grocery at Shaw/Armstong, on Thurs.February 23rd. We will leave at 9:40 AM, traveling by bus.
PHYSICAL FITNESS TRAINING - We have begun preparing in earnest for our Physical Fitness Testing which will take place the week of March 7-11.
FCS AUCTION- The FCS auction is underway! This is our largest fundraising event each year. We are excited about setting our goals even higher than last year. The auction is a great way to donate to our school. Your donations will bless the lives of others. Please start thinking about your gift or donation. We are asking each child’s family to contact family, friends, neighbors, and merchants to make a donation to our auction. Students will be given a ticket for every 10 points they earn in donations. I am hoping that each family will find that special something to donate to the auction. I would like to encourage you to support this event by giving or getting donations of services, trips, items, desserts, and/or dinner tickets. The dinner/silent and live auction will take place Saturday, March 17th , from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the FCS Gym.
