Dear Parents and Students:
One of our bothers or sisters blessed me with these words this week.  Whoever you are you are better at encouraging folks than you think you are, or maybe you are just good at listening to GOD’S Spirit.  Whatever the case may be, thank you for sharing.

Dear Parents,                       March 26, 2012

 

Thank you so much for coming to parent conferences. It was wonderful to talk to each of you!  You can be very proud of your amazing Kindergarteners!!!

 

We will be talking about Easter and it’s meaning this week.  Praise God for our school where we can talk freely about Jesus!  Our character trait is forgiveness.

 

This Thursday is our Easter Party and Fresno State Farm trip.  We are having a picnic and party with our tour.  Be at school by 8:15.  We will ride the bus.  We’ll be back to school by 12:00.  DON’T FORGET TO SEND $3 FOR PIZZA LUNCH! We will provide an Easter dessert and have an Easter Egg Hunt!!!!  Wear your Witters Critters shirt.

 

Remember Easter vacation begins March 31 and ends April 9.  We return to school on TUESDAY, April 9.

 

Have a wonderful vacation!  I’ll miss my Critters!!!!

HE HAS RISEN! This week our class with share the good news with grades 3rd-6th. Mrs. Savage has been inspired to teach and have the students lead a message on “The Tomb WAS Empty!” This week our class will share the good news with grades 3rd-6th in a Bible lesson. Over Easter break, we’d like to encourage your child to share this message with you and other friends and family members. The a copy of the message will be sent home on Friday.

SPELLING: more roots on “tend” then “sign

MATH:

This week students will be given math packets at their zone of proximal development. The unfinished daily class assignment is homework. Each daily assignment is due the following day and late if not turned in. Expect a little homework and assist your child as needed. After Easter break, we will begin a unit in Geometry. Those struggling with this week’s concepts will be assigned nightly homework review as mastering the standard is part of the fifth grade goal.

WRITING:

Students completed their Young Author stories! The stories were filled with adventure, problems, and more! Some students incorporated a Biblical perspective in their fictional writing. High School students in journalism will read the stories and judge the top three to be acknowledged in our class.

STATE REPORTS:  We will begin State Reports this week. Each student will be assigned a state and given a rubric on the items they should look for to incorporate into their research. We will begin our project to promote neatness and accuracy. We will celebrates states and reports will be shared during the week of April 17th.

READING:  Students are reading independent fictional stories and completing a foldable response. The foldables are due this Friday, March 30. Thank you to those students who have turned in their assignments early!
SOCIAL STUDIES:
 
TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION: Students will complete their group mobiles this week and learn about the Revolutionary War. A quiz will be given on Friday covering the topics:  French & Indian War, Taxation Acts, Boston Massacre, and victory of the Revolutionary War.
WESTWARD MOVEMENT: Students will begin collaborating on assigned topics to present on a project board to their class. The topics will be based on events as part of the westward movement and American history. Students will gather information both in and our of class and assemble it on a poster board in class. These projects will be due the first week in May and each group will give a project talk regarding the information they learned from their research.

April 23-May 18 Following our projects, students will hop on board the Westward Movement Trail during the last week of April. This is an interactive trail providing students with history, language arts, math, and cooperative learning of the US expanding into the western states. Grade is based on individual participation and points awarded for completion of work.

Students will be tested on the remaining 36 states and capitals on April 29th. As we practice in class, I encourage students to use time outside of class to locate both the state and it’s capital.

HAPPY EASTER!!

I hope you all enjoy your time off and have a wonderful Easter Vacation with your family next week!! I am asking for your prayers this Friday, as I will be having surgery on my foot.  I will be recovering over Easter and will be absent for the first 1-2 weeks after Easter vacation, depending on the healing process.  Mrs. LeBlanc will be my sub and she is fabulous! Thank you for your support and prayers!!

This week we will continue to study several events leading up to Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection.  He has RISEN! The students will have their Resurrection Easter party with Mrs. LeBlanc on Friday, March 30th from 1:45-3:00 PM.  You are welcome to join them!   A special thank you to those who are providing items for our party and to Mrs. Martinez who is putting it all together.

MATH

Both grades will be taking a test this Thursday over the concepts we have covered thus far in Chapter 9 while it is still fresh in their mind. :-) The pre-test will be completed in class this week.

High school judges will select a first, second, and third place winning story from both our 3rd and 4th graders to be published.  The first place winners will have their story published as a book and it will go on sale at Open House.  Winning authors will be available to autograph their Young Author Story on Open House Night.  All of the students have worked very hard on their stories and did a fantastic job!!!

SOCIAL STUDIES

Please note that our Fresno History Board projects will be completed in class as partners.  Please bring your project boards and borders to school when we return from Easter vacation on Tuesday, April 10.

EASTER RESURRECTION CELEBRATION

This week we continue our praise and worship learning Easter songs and following the events leading to Christ’ death and resurrection.  Last week we studied Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, The Last Supper, and Christ’s evening of prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane followed by His arrest and abandonment by His disciples.  This week in our Easter books we will study the story of Christ’s death, His burial, His resurrection, The Road to Emmaus, Doubting Thomas, and His Ascension to His Heavenly Father.

Our class will have  a Resurrection Celebration on Friday, March 30 from 1:30-3:00 PM.  Andrea Ramirez will be contacting parents who volunteered to help with this holiday party.  You are also welcome to contact her if you would like to help in any way.  All are welcome to join us!

SILENT AUCTION CLASS TEA SET

On a congratulatory note, the beautiful class teapot and cup set created by our third graders and and our art teacher Mrs. Taggett, on display Saturday night at the Auction Dinner went to the highest bidder and that was Henry and Tami Grimmius, Megan’s parents!!  What a great keepsake!!!

EASTER VACATION

The greatest gift of all God has given us is His Son and the opportunity to spend  eternity with Him.  As Easter approaches we look forward to celebrating this Resurrection Season with our families and the joy of knowing we will see Him as He is in all His glory some day!  May you enjoy your vacation fully relaxing and resting with your family and loved ones and we will gather back together on Tuesday, April 10.

LOST AND FOUND:

Please have your student check the lost and found racks. Lots of jackets, sweaters,  lunch boxes, and water bottles have been left since the beginning of the school year.

SPIRIT WEAR:

Every Friday we encourage all of our classmates to wear a FCS shirt to demonstrate school spirit. Each of the classes will be rated on the percentage of students wearing spirit wear to build the enthusiasm.

20 WAYS TO LOOK AT A BOOK PROJECT:

After reading your book complete any of the “20 Ways to Look at a Book” assignments. Make sure the points add up to 100 points.

This project is due May 3rd.

Complete any of the assignments below that add up to 100 points:

  1. Summarize the book in poem form with rhyme. Minimum 20 lines. (10 points)
  2. Discuss in depth the relevance of the title. 1 page. (10 points)
  3. Write a letter to the author. 1 page. (10 points)
  4. Create a diorama with a brief description. It could be a scene from the book or a setting. (20 points)
  5. Write a two minute radio advertisement persuading the public why they should buy and read this book. Perform in class or on CD. (20 points)

  7. Q & A – Pretend you’re interviewing a person from the book. Write your interview in question and answer format. 1 page. (10 points)

Dear Parents,

Remember we have praise and worship in chapel at 8:00 A.M. every Monday morning for the first 20-30 minutes, thanks to Mr. Weimer and children’s Pastor Brian Brooks. 

VISITING THE RESIDENTS AT SUNRISE SENIOR LIVING:
This Monday afternoon the students will create some artwork  with a guest art teacher, Mrs. Maya Davis, who is visiting our class.  They will use these creations to bless the residents of Sunrise Senior Living on Wednesday, March 28.  We will walk next door right after recess at 10:15 and visit with the residents in their parlor, walking back by 11:15.  Please join us if you are able to do so, or pray for blessings on all!

CELEBRATING THE RESURRECTION AND EASTER VACATION: 
Throughout this week we will emphasize the importance of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  From praise and worship, to creating artwork, sharing with our senior neighbors, discussing devotions and our Bible study, to a final celebration on Friday, the students will have opportunities to embrace the great sacrifice and promise of God. 

A MESSAGE FROM ROOM MOTHER DARBEE WHIPPLE:

Thank you for providing the goodies we will need for the party. It will be another good one, I’m sure!
We are going to put together a set of Resurrection Eggs. For this project each student will need bring the following items to class by Thursday, the 29th…

MATH:
Both grades will continue Ch. 8.  5th graders are studying Multiplication and Division of Fractions while 6th graders learn Applications of Percent.  This week I will also pass out the challenge activity sheet packet.  A minimum of 5 pages should be done in the packets, though I encourage more in case of errors or a desire to do extra credit.  These challenges help fulfill our FCS ESLR of encouraging “critical thinkers.”

SCIENCE:
We will begin a new unit this week on matter and chemistry.

READING AND LANGUAGE:
Students should be concluding their fantasy books.  A short graphic organizer will be given for the students to write their responses to the books.  We will then begin new Literature Circles as the students are placed in ability groups to read award winning books.  We are also typing and editing our Young Author stories.  Each of these will be made into books and displayed in the hallway.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
5th graders should continue to study and master their U.S. states, locations, and capitals while they move forward with their study of American history.

6th graders continue to study ancient civilizations and work on their civilization projects.

Dear Parents,

We’ve nearly come to the conclusion of our class speeches.  The children have really enjoyed listening and learning about each other.  I’m so proud of all of them.  They’re future leaders.

The emphasis this week is all about Easter.  The children will be making Easter placemats for the neighbors and preparing an Easter presentation for our class Easter Celebration on Friday afternoon.  We’d love to have you join us at 1:00.

Dear Families,

I pray you will have a wonderful, blessed vacation next week, enjoying time with family and friends as we celebrate our RISEN SAVIOR!!!   He Lives!!!!

MATH - First Graders are working on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. Second Graders are adding and subtracting with regrouping to 100. The chapter review for both grades will be due on Wednesday, March 28th.  We will have our Chapter tests  Wednesday, March 28th.

FIRST GRADERS - Book bags that came home Friday, March 23rd, will not be due until Friday, April 13th. I am sending enough books to last for two weeks. With all the special activities for Easter on March 30th, I didn’t want to put books in the mix. You WILL NOT send the book bag back until April 13th. If you finish before they are due, just grab some of your own books at home to read.  The children can read so much material now that it does not need to be controlled. Have fun!!!  Also, there will be no assignment from the “Blue Book” until after vacation.

SECOND GRADERS - Homework folders that came home on March 23rd will not be due until April 13th.  I will include two weeks worth of Reading Logs, for a total of 100 minutes. There will be no assignment from the Anthology book until after vacation. I will also include the next Book Project, which is a Diorama.  It will be due on May 15th (Open House day). It will be on display for that night. This is a VERY fun, creative project.  The children love it!

SPEECHES-  We will continue with our speeches this week and finish up on Thursday. The children may dress in costume if they wish and bring a food that represents their country. These suggestions are optional and not a requirement.

FIRST GRADE PROJECT - We will be writing about ourselves for a project to be displayed at Open House.  An information paper came home on March 19th. This is usually information that the children do not know.Please fill it out and return by Friday, March 30th. You will enjoy reading these at Open House. Also, please send in a picture of your child (not younger than Kindergarten) that will be displayed on the project.  This can be a school photo or a candid shot.The largest it should be is 5×7.  You will get the photo returned at the end of the year. Many Thanks!

FIVE – A DAY -  Due to second grade speeches in the afternoon, we will resume Five-A- Days after vacation.

 BIBLE - We will be studying the Easter story, focusing on the death and resurrection of Jesus, the foundation of our faith., 

WORK ENVELOPE - We will not bring our work envelope home on Monday, March 26th, but we will bring it home on Friday, March 30th, which will include the Easter curriculum. Please return by April 13th.

SHOW AND TELL - This week will be Team B. Your child can show twice during the week.

FIELD TRIP - Both First and Second Grades will  be going to the World Market at People’s Campus. This is put on by the 7th graders and is always a great experience. The date is Thursday, April 12th. We will travel by bus, leaving at 11:00 AM and returning by 12:30 PM.  We will eat lunch after we return. Each child can bring $5 to spend at the Market.


EASTER CELEBRATION -  We will be having an Easter Celebration on March 30th from 1-2:40 PM.   Each child is to bring 12 filled, plastic Easter eggs for our egg hunt. Otherwise, we have everything we need  for our party.  Many thanks!!!

Mr. Matthew Weimer – March 19, 2012

Dear Parents and Students:

Working to finalize grades and continuing to teach has taken up almost all of my time for the past few weeks.  They will be finalized for this class by the end of the school day today.  Please forgive the delay and for the tardiness of this newsletter.

Thank you for your help with the auction.  I saw some of you on the way into the gym; that was fun.  I hope you had a good night eating, bidding, sharing memories with your friends, and ultimately helping to keep FCS moving forward.

As I was working on grades, GOD was working on me.  I graded and sang and longed for my worship to be acceptable to my Father, but I felt it was stained and unworthy because sometimes I grumble about the difficulties of the cross I bear.  What I longed to belt out was a fresh version of a song Rich Mullins sang in the 90s - Step by Step or Sometimes By Step. I wanted to join Brooke Ligertwood as she sang Like Incense.  I want every word to be acceptable in His sight. I want nothing to “stain” my songs.

After repenting of my thankless words, and heart, God broke me.  And  I was finally able to sing to Him -
Oh God you are my God and I will ever praise You. 
And I will seek You in the morning and I will learn to walk in Your ways.
And step by step You’ll lead me and I will follow You all of my days.

It’s based on Psalm 63. If you have the inclination, you can find it on youtube.com. You can also learn the story of this brother who, even though I never met him, has ministered to my heart and soul countless times.

SCIENCE PROJECTS

The pairings are out and the kids have begun to clear their ideas with me.  Talk to your son or daughter and find out they’ll be working with, and what they’ll be doing.  If they don’t have an idea yet, have them look tonight so they can begin soon.

4TH QUARTER BOOK REPORT PROJECT

AUTOBIOGRAPHY NEWSPAPER REPORT

All 4th grade students will be choosing an autobiography and will make a newspaper to display the required content.  Please ask your child to show you the guidelines and rubric we discussed earlier this week.

****ALL PROJECTS ARE DUE ON FRIDAY, APRIL 27th and will be on display for Open House.

WRITING

We completed our Writing benchmark on a fictional narrative.  We are now in the process of completing our Young Author stories.  I look forward to seeing the creative side of the students as their characters come alive in their writing!

FIELD TRIPS

We  are working on planning another 4th grade field trip sometime in April.   I will give you more details on the trip as the dates get closer.
