CLASSROOM NEWS

FCS AUCTION:

Our annual FCS Auction will be held on March 16.  We hope you will think of items to donate and join us for a delicious dinner and evening of fun!   Popular auction items include: boutique items, collectibles, vacation packages, jewelry, art, tools, dinner packages, professional services, electronics, garden supplies, gift certificates, etc.  Turn in the forms with your donation (or clearly mark auction donation) and our class will get credits towards a party. Please be sure and order your tickets/tables as soon as possible.

If you are interested in donating a dessert for the auction please bring it to the Central Office on March 15, 2013 if it doesn’t need to be refrigerated. If it needs to be refrigerated you can bring it to the Fresno Christian Gym on Saturday March 16, 2013. Someone will be there to receive desserts from 10:00am to 3:00pm. You may bring it wrapped or we can wrap it for you. What to bring: Cookies, Brownies, Pies, Cup Cakes, Cake Pops, etc.

Desserts are a huge seller and can go for even more if on a decorative platter or stand which will be sold with the dessert.

SPRING PICTURES:

YEARBOOK PICTURES:

The yearbook class will be finishing our class yearbook pages soon. If you have any pictures of our students or class could you please e-mail them to me or send them on a disk by this Friday.

ELEMENTARY CHOIR:

Attention choir parents: our first festival is Tuesday, March 19. We will load the bus at 2, travel to St. Therese (Maroa/Floradora) and sing in the 3:00 session. Our turn is at 3:30. You may pick up your child after they sing, or after the session is done, about 5:00. Please remember that no one may enter the church while a choir is singing, so if you are picking up your child early let me know. I will escort them to the lobby to meet you. Also, our choir attire will be here soon, so don’t forget to get the rest of the uniform. Boys: long sleeved, collared white shirt. Black pants (not jeans) Black shoes (not athletic) Black socks. Girls: white blouse or polo, short sleeved. Black, closed toe shoes. Black headband, any kind.

MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM FIELD TRIP:

On Wednesday, April 24 all three classes of 5th and 6th graders will take two coach buses to Monterey to visit the Aquarium. This trip will provide a wonderful opportunity to learn about our science unit on oceanography and the habitats of sea life. We can take up to 5 chaperones in our class and we have each spot filled. If you would still like to go, please email me and I can put you on the waiting list incase someone can not make the trip or more spots open up. No extra siblings or friends may be brought by the chaperones, however, according to the Aquarium. Please check your schedule carefully before you commit to chaperone and email your child’s teacher and Mrs. Lazo if you would like to join us. We will leave school at 6:30 A.M. and return to school at 6:30 P.M. We are looking forward to becoming Ocean Explorers!

INSPIRE GALA 2013:

PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT CONFERENCES:

Remember, the entire week of parent conferences, February 4-8, students will be dismissed at 12:00 noon.  Since each conference is allotted 20 minutes and I have a full schedule, I will appreciate your help by being prompt.  I look forward to meeting with each one of you.

SPELLING BEE:

Congratulations to the FCS Elementary Spelling Team which competed in the non-public schools spelling competition on Saturday. We are very proud of 4th graders Vijay Stephen and Hadarah Kok, 5th graders Anjeli Macaranas and Daniel Williams and 6th grader Seth Freitas for representing our school so well. Seth Freitas placed 2nd, Anjeli Macaranas placed 4th and Daniel Williams placed 1st. Daniel will compete in the Fresno County Office of Education‘s annual County Spell-Off on March 21. Go Eagles!

Students should continue reading a book for their 3rd quarter book project. Their Pizza Book Project is due March 8, 2013.

You’re invited to FCS’s State of the School Address

Monday, January 28th at 7:00 pm in the Peoples Church Music Suite

Superintendent Debbie Siebert will hold the fourth annual State of the School Address on January 28th at 7:00 pm in the Peoples Church Music Suite, Building 9. As a school community it is beneficial for everyone involved to have a clear understanding of how well we are meeting the mission of Fresno Christian Schools. Along with reporting on the school program Mrs. Siebert will present information regarding the financial picture of our school. As we work together to strengthen Fresno Christian the more information we have about all aspects of the program the more effective our unified efforts will be.

NEW YEAR FUND RAISER: (PTF)

Tuesday, January 8  started our new FUNd raiser…World’s Finest Chocolate! · Easy to sell and still only $1.00 each. · Parents MUST sign out for the boxes of chocolate. (Once opened, the boxes CANNOT be returned) ·  Pick up boxes after school  in the carpool area.

POETRY:

Students should be ready to present their selections by memory in class on Tuesday, January 22.  Grades will be  based on a rubric score and two or three students will be chosen from each class to  present at the Oral Interpretation Assembly on January 28.

READING:

SCIENCE:

This Wednesday, January 24 is the due date for the science research paper. As listed on the requirement sheet given on January 9, each student should turn in a Key Word Outline, a rough draft, a reference list (one or more sources), and a final draft on their choice of earthquake or volcanic eruption in history.  On Wednesday they will also make a brief presentation in class where they tell any five facts connected to their report from memory.

ACADEMICS

POETRY:

All students will be required to present their poems of about 2 minutes or more to the class on January 22nd. The students have had Christmas break to study and will have the first few weeks of school to practice in class. After judging, the top 3 students will be chosen to compete in the school-wide competition for the Peach Blossom Festival of Oral Interpretation on January 28.

READING:

This week we will begin reading new class novels.  5th grade will read The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare, while the 6th grade will read The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw.  These are award-winning books that connect to the social studies curriculum for each grade level.

Students will also need a book for their 3rd quarter book project.

MATH:

Math Quiz on Thursday.

SCIENCE:

Each student chose a an earthquake or volcanic eruption that occurred any time and place in history as the focus of a research paper in our study of Earth Science..  They were given rubrics and requirement sheets this past Monday and Wednesday and completed their research and KWO (Key Word Outline).  Over the next week and a half they will be expected to complete a rough draft, reference list, and final draft, according to the requirement sheet and time line, before they make a brief presentation in class.

 Students will have an opportunity to explore poetry and choose a poem soon for their oral presentations in January. Choices should be made early so students will have ample time to memorize their poems, adding expression and gestures. All students will be required to present their poems of about 2 minutes or more to the class in mid-January. After judging, the top 3 students will be chosen to compete in the school-wide competition for the Peach Blossom Festival of Oral Interpretation. I encourage you to begin searching for meaningful poems online and at the library. You may choose your poem in advance.
