BENCHMARK ASSESSMENTS

During the next two weeks we will be completing our benchmark assessments in writing,  math, and reading inventories.

TOGETHER WE CAN

This our last week to bring in our contributions for the food drive. It will be benefiting the Pinedale community. Please bring your items to our classroom and we will have a big red bucket to put them in. It is a great opportunity for our children to share with those in need! The final day to bring items is Tuesday, Dec. 9th.

CHRISTMAS FLEECE BLANKETS MINISTRY

Mrs. Savage, a Fresno Christian Parent, does a project each year with student volunteers to make fleece blankets that will be shared with Women and Children in need in the Fresno area.  Students (3rd grade and up) who wish to participate need to bring 2 or 4 yards of fleece fabric by December 1.  Each blanket requires 4 yards. They can pair up with a friend and each bring 2 yards, or bring 4 yards on their own.
In the first 2 weeks of December there will be several time slots available for teachers to send these students to room 526 to assemble their blanket with Mrs. Savage.  Parents who wish to help Mrs. Savage prepare the materials (cutting, etc.) may call her 999-1957.

 SECRET ANGEL

This week our class will read the story entitled “The Last Straw.”  This Christmas story is about doing acts of kindness and sharing special secret surprises with those we love.  We will then draw names and from Dec.8th until Dec. 11th, third graders will be a secret angel to a special friend. Your child can draw a picture, write an encouraging note, bring a small sweet treat, pencil, sticker, eraser or any small token that says “I am thinking about you and praying for you.” The children should try to bring something every day.

On Thursday, December 11,  third graders will bring a gift  (no more than $5.00) for their secret friend and reveal the person they have been blessing. Above all, keep it a secret.  Do not put the name of the child to whom the present goes, but put your own child’s name on the tag (who the gift is from.)

CHRISTMAS SKATING PARTY

Please return your transportation request for our elementary Christmas skating party by this Friday, December 5.  The skating party will be  from 9:30-11:30 AM at Cal Skate on Friday, December 12th. We are taking carpools. I will have a sign-up outside my classroom door if you can help us with this. If you are going directly to Cal-Skate,  please let me know ahead of time as it will affect how I set up carpools.

All skating fees for the students are pre-paid through our class account. Parents and siblings that skate will need to pay the $6.00 for each skating session at the door. Non-skating parents who would just like to come and watch kids skate will need to pay an entrance fee of $3.00 at the door. Parents that wish to be a spectator at one session and skate at the other session need to pay $9.50.

Roller blades may been worn but they must have flush bolts, (no sharp exposed bolts/screws). If your skates have a heel brake it must be in good condition, no screw showing. Roller blades will be inspected by Cal Skate employees and if they do not meet the standards, you will need to use roller skates.Children are free to leave directly from Cal-Skate for Christmas vacation if that works best for you. School is dismissed at 12:00 PM.

PEACH BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Please check the handout that comes home on Dec 1st, which includes the requirements for participating in Fresno State’s Peach Blossom Festival.  This is a FCS requirement for all 1st-6th classes.  Parents may help third graders select a poem to memorize which is at least three to four stanzas (twelve to sixteen lines)  for presentation in a class Oral Interpretation Speech Meet on Friday, January 23rd. There are poems online, in our classroom, and poetry books in the library.  Finalists will be selected to complete in an elementary school-wide assembly on Monday, January 26th to determine FCS representatives for the Fresno State Speech Blossom Festival in spring.

Although this is not due until we come back from Christmas vacation, I strongly suggest you try and choose your poem before January.  Students should begin to memorize their poem at home with parental guidance.  A “Helpful Hints” guide sheet will be provided  for an effective presentation.  Please begin to work individually with your child on these 5 steps over Christmas vacation.  Judging is based on expression, platform presence, voice, and speech.

We will practice at school as well, after Christmas vacation. This is always a great experience for the children. You need to pick your poem and bring me a copy by Wed. Jan. 14th. Thanks for your help!

BIBLE

We will  study the story of Christ’s birth during the next two weeks beginning with God’s angel, Gabriel, visiting Mary to  share the good news of Jesus.  We will learn about Mary’s visit to see her cousin, Elizabeth and husband, Zacharias.  We will journey to Bethlehem with Joseph and Mary for Christ’s birth, relive the story of  the shepherds and Wise Men, along with the narrow escape to Egypt from King Herod’s plot.  We look forward to learning about the true meaning of the season and God’s greatest gift of all!!

SOCIAL STUDIES

MULTIPLICATION FACTS

Third graders will begin a special level program to learn our multiplication facts.  Each week we will concentrate on a particular factor family.  Students will study the facts at school and students should review them at home.  We will have a daily 3-minute timed test of 36 multiplication facts in that factor family.  Our goal is to pass the fact family each Friday.  This is a progressive test and we will learn facts up through the family of 9.  Students must pass one level with 100% accuracy before moving on to the next level. Students should pass all 9 levels by the end of the third quarter.  We will begin with the factor families of 0, 1, 2, and 3’s.  Now is a great time to purchase a set of multiplication fact flash cards for your child to help with daily practice in multiplication as  well as in addition and subtraction facts if you do not yet have these tools.  The Dollar Tree offers them very inexpensively.  You may also visit abcya.com.   Go to third grade to practice multiplication facts through games on-line.

BIBLE

Last week we began a new unit in Bible:  Unit 3 Jacob and Joseph.  Jacob was unworthy to inherit God’s promises.  He was a trickster, a schemer, and one who tried to live by his own devices.  Yet God chose him and worked through his schemes to eventually fulfill the covenant promises.

The things that happened to Joseph were unexpected.  Yet God used Joseph to preserve His chosen people during the famine.  The story of Jacob and his family is the story of God working out His plan for His people by turning their often sinful choices into ultimate blessings.

Through the varied events of their lives, God developed His covenant people into the beginnings of a great nation, and God’s promise to Abraham began to come true.  Here are the stories third graders will be studying:

Jacob and Esau:  The Birthright and Blessing

Jacob at Bethel and at the Well

Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel

Jacob’s Sons

Jacob Flees from Laban

God Wrestles with Jacob

Jacob Returns to Canaan

Joseph Sold into Slavery

Joseph in Potiphar’s House

More Dreams

Joseph:  A Ruler in Egypt

The Brothers’ First and Second Trips to Egypt

The Reunion

The Deaths of Jacob and Joseph

MATH

During the next few weeks our class will be learning about multiplication of whole numbers in Chapter 5.  You can expect to see work that provides practice in multiplying with  2, 5, 10, 3,  and 4.  We will also be learning about the special multiplication properties of 0 and 1.  We will learn how to represent multiplication sentences using arrays (objects arranged in equal rows and equal columns.  During this chapter students should continue to to practice and memorize  basic multiplication facts.

Next week we will also begin short factor family tests of 36 problems beginning with the factor family of 0, 1, and 2. We will progress through the factor family of 9 in sequence mastering each level with 100% proficiency until we have mastered each fact family.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will be finishing Unit 2 study of Native Americans, California tribes, preserving culture, and Native American sovereign government today.  We will also focus the next two weeks on the arrival of the Pilgrims to the New World, their survival in search for religious freedom, the providence of Squanto’s life in their survival their very first winter, and the contribution of the Wampanoag Native tribe as we study the First Thanksgiving story.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

This is a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about giving.  Operation Christmas Child brought smiles to the faces of 100 million poor, sick and suffering children in more than 100 countries last year through shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, candy and other small gifts. But these boys and girls received something even more important than a Christmas present. They also leaned about the greatest gift of all—God’s son, Jesus Christ.

Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers millions of shoebox gifts to children in desperate circumstances around the world. In addition to bringing happiness to boys and girls who other wise wouldn’t receive any presents, this exciting project of Samaritan’s Purse also opens doors for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ. Through children’s literature and evangelistic programs, many lives are changed for eternity.

We would like to invite you to join us this year as we again reach out to boys and girls in the name of Jesus Christ for children who face a daily struggle against war, persecution, disease, natural disaster, poverty, illness, or neglect. Pray that God will meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The boxes are due on November 7th.

Each student is allowed to invite two adult guests.  The free reservations adult guests  must be made by emailing the Joni and Friends Central California office directly:  jafcentralcal@gmail.com.  Please provide your student’s name, grade, and the names and addresses of the guests.  You will be sent an email confirmation.  For questions about the event, call the Joni and Friends office directly at 559-227-5664.

BOOK REPORT PROJECT

Our next genre of literature will be to read a biography about a famous person.  A biography consists of factual stories about real people from the past or present.   The book should be at least 80-100 pages. If you are not sure if the length is ok, just bring it in and I will take a look. These books are meant to be something other than an easy picture book.

Third graders will be completing “Stand-Up Time Line” book report project.  Also, be sure to do the “Brainwork” assignment described at the bottom of the page.  It is an autobiography stand-up time line about your child.  This student time line will include seven dates or events in your 3rd grader’s life.  Your child will create their autobiography on the flip-side of the biography project.    Included is a grading rubric indicating more detailed information and the total points possible.  Your book report will be due on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH.

END OF THE FIRST QUARTER

The first quarter concludes Friday, Oct. 10th.  Grades will be finalized and posted the following week on Tuesday, October 14 for your printing purposes.

Please check your child’s grades on Powerschool and your child’s homework folder this week for any assignments that need to be turned in.   If you have assignments that you want your child to re-correct please send those in by this Thursday, October 9th.   All new assignments for the week of October 6-10 will roll over into Second Quarter Grades.

SPELLINGCITY.COM

This year, we will be using VocabularySpellingCity.com in our classroom.  VocabularySpellingCity is a website that helps students learn their weekly spelling and vocabulary words while having fun at the same time.

As a teacher, I will put up my weekly spelling lists on VocabularySpelling City and your children can review the words, and play spelling and vocabulary games with their words to reinforce the learning process.

Here is how to help your child master his or her spelling and vocabulary words:

Simply go to www.spellingcity.com to see how the site works.  To get started, click on “Sample Lists” and choose any list your like.  Then try the Teach MeTest Me, or Play a Game link.

You can find our class’ spelling lists by using the Find A List feature and searching for my name, Mrs. Fraser, or you can go directly to my VocabularySpellingCity homepage at spellingcity.com/cherifraser33.  You can bookmark this URL on your computer to make it easy for your child to access the class’ word lists each week!

Many kids enjoy building their spelling skills with Spelling City.  Please encourage your children to spend about twenty minutes, two nights in a row before their weekly test.  Let’s work together as a team to ensure that your child becomes an independent, lifelong learner.
