images001Dear Families,
Blessings to you and your family this Thanksgiving season as we celebrate God’s goodness to us.  His mercies are new every morning!!!  Have a wonderful, memory making day with those you love.

images004Thanksgiving Celebration– Our Thanksgiving Blessing afternoon is Monday, November 24th.Our festivities will start at 1:15  PM,   after PE.  This is a change from our previously stated time. We will be making a “Blessing Mix”, doing a craft and having a treat. Many thanks for your help in making memories with these precious children.

sing02Carrington Pointe – We will be going to sing Christmas carols for the residents on Thurs, Dec. 11th at 10:00 AM. We will need several parent helpers to safely walk to their facility. This will bring great joy to these precious, often forgotten seniors. It will also be a wonderful lesson for our children that we are to serve and minister to others. It should be a special blessing for all.

Thanksgiving Program- The big day is almost here!!!!! First Graders are the Pilgrims and the Kindergartners are the Indians. Second Graders will be Americans. Please wear dark pants or skirt and a white shirt. The girls could wear a black dress as well. Please don’t go out and buy anything special, just wear what is the closest to what you have. The program will be on Tuesday, November 25th at 10:45 AM at SMC Main.  Bring your cameras and get there early for a good seat!!!!!

Work Envelopes – All of our Thanksgiving theme work will be coming home in the envelopes on Monday, Nov. 24th. For some of the students there will be papers that did not get finished, or in some cases not even started. We were doing many varied assignments and there is a vast difference in how quickly some accomplish tasks. These papers do not need to be finished and returned unless it says “Do”

Our students are already volunteering as Book Buddies at Pinedale elementary school and we would like to continue our support for their programs. Our delivery this year will help families by providing food for Christmas. If you are interested in making a financial donation, please send cash/check to the office and designate “Food – Pinedale.” We have a program with Food Maxx where we use scrip and S.H.A.R.E.S. so FCS also benefits! If you have any questions, please contact Rob Foshee at rfoshee@fresnochristian.com. The “Red Bucket” outside our classroom is for our food donations.

Dear Families,

It was a wonderful celebration of Mrs. Devereaux on Friday.  Thank you for all your contributions and help.  She was truly touched!!!!

We are also excited for our Blessing afternoon on Monday, Nov.24th. Please check the sign-up sheet outside our classroom door. Our hearts are full of thankfulness for God’s abundant blessings!!!

Work Envelopes – Please become in the habit of returning these EVERY Friday as well as the book bag.  There just is not time on to do this on Mondays.  We will start  on Friday with “Thinking Bench” time at recess if these two items are forgotten.  They are not in trouble, but will sit and think of some strategies that will help them remember.  When they have come up with their plan they will tell Mrs. King.  This usually ends up being 2-3 minutes.

Reading -. In our Reading Groups  we will continue with  Leveled Readers where they are becoming accustomed to unfamiliar text.  This has proved challenging for some.  Be sure you are reading the books I send home on Fridays and this should help. It doesn’t hurt to read the books twice if you are done earlier in the week. This will give much opportunity to apply the phonetic skills that they have been mastering up to this point. They will encounter words they must decode as well as words with the ed ( which has three different sounds – ed as in played, ed as in jumped, and ed as in wanted as well as ing endings. You will begin to see this in Copy and Dictation which is more challenging. Most of our seat work for November will be themed based activities.  We will not get back into our Anthology books until after Christmas vacation.

Writing – We will be working on writing about an expository place for our benchmark the week of Dec 1-5, which is right after we get back from Thanksgiving vacation.

Math – We will start a new chapter Time and Calendar. This will take us up to Christmas time. We will also be working on some math review sheets  with a Thanksgiving theme.

Social Science – We will continue with “We Love Our Country.

Bible – We will continue to  focus  on the theme of Thankfulness.

Thanksgiving Celebration– Our Thanksgiving Blessing afternoon is Monday, November 24th. We will have lunch together in our room. Please be on the watch for a sign-up from our room moms for the needed lunch items. After lunch we will go to recess and after recess at 12:30 PM we will be making a “Blessing Mix”, doing a craft and decorating a cookie..We will be doing stations for these activities. There is a sign-up for the needed items for our Blessing Mix and other party goods. Many thanks for your help in making memories with these precious children.

Thanksgiving Unit- We have many activities planned for this unit of study. We will be learning about immigrants in Social Science and the contributions they have made to America. Among the immigrants we will study are the Pilgrims who sailed from England. We will culminate our studies with a Thanksgiving Program with the Kindergartners. If you know your child will not be here for the program, please let me know, as that will be helpful in our preparation in assigning parts.. Thanks! Children are free to go with their parents after the program. I will be there for those who need to stay.

Absences – As we move into the Holiday Season, please e-mail any dates your child may be gone Some may be taking vacations and I want to be sure your child has everything that is needed to keep up while he/she is gone.

Show and Tell – This week is Team B. Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Book Orders – Our November, December and Holiday book order will be in the Monday Envelopes. I will place the order online on November 21st. If you want to order books for your child as a Christmas gift, just let me know and I will hold them aside and give them to you in private.

Mrs. Tally – November 10, 2014

thankfulDear Families,

It is wonderful to be back in the classroom with your beautiful children. I am getting to know them and that has been so fun. They are all such unique creations of God, all with varying gifts and abilities. Just two more weeks until we celebrate Thanksgiving with the Indians and Pilgrims!!! There will be lots of picture taking, for sure!!!! The program starts at 10:45 A.M. on Tuesday, Nov. 25th at Student Ministries Center. You might want to come a little early to get a good seat. It will be lots of fun. They are free to go after the program, however, I will be at school all afternoon to be with those who don’t go home.

We are also excited for our Blessing afternoon on Monday, Nov.24th. Please check the sign-up sheet outside our classroom door. Our hearts are full of thankfulness for God’s abundant blessings!!!

Work Envelopes – In the envelope on Monday will be lots of theme work from Oct. Your child does not need to return it if you choose for them to do it. There is such a spread of how fast each child completes tasks, that many have things they never got to. Part of this is due to LOTS of chattiness which we have been addressing. Any encouragement from home would be appreciated. If the paper has do and return, that is a requirement and needs to be completed and returned.

Language Arts – I will be continuing to work with the children in all aspects of reading. In our Reading Groups I have introduced Leveled Readers. We are working hard on our program which you will so enjoy. There won’t be grass growing under our feet, that is for sure. It is a great group of little people.

Writing – We will be working on writing about an expository place for our benchmark the week of Dec 1-5, which is right after we get back from Thanksgiving vacation.

Math -We continue to work on Chapter 6 with adding and subtracting to 12. Please continue being faithful in doing a 4 minute Math Drill each night. It really pays off as we get into the bigger numbers. Our standard is facts to 18!!! We are also reviewing fact families which some are struggling with.We will take our chapter test on Thursday, November 13th. The chapter review will come home on November 6th and be due on November 13th.

Social Science – We will continue with “We Love Our Country” as well as talking about the contributions of our veterans. We will learn that freedom is NOT free. There was great sacrifice. Also, we will be covering the immigrants (Pilgrims) who have come to America.

Bible – We will be focusing on the theme of Thankfulness.

Thanksgiving Celebration Our Thanksgiving Blessing afternoon is Monday, November 24th. There will be a sign-up on the door on Nov 3rd for the needed items for our Blessing Mix. Many thanks for your help in making memories with these precious children.

Thanksgiving Unit– We have many activities planned for this unit of study. We will be learning about immigrants in Social Science and the contributions they have made to America. Among the immigrants we will study are the Pilgrims who sailed from England. We will culminate our studies with a Thanksgiving Program with the Kindergartners. Show and Tell – This week is Team A. Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Veteran’s Day Parade Tuesday, November 11 at 11:30 AM – Please join us as we participate in honoring our Veterans by marching in The Fresno Veterans Day Parade. Join with the Fresno Christian Percussion, Color Guard, Music Students, and Cheerleaders. This event is open to all Fresno Christian students and families. Meet downtown at Ventura on M St., south of Inyo St. at 11:30.

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes are due November 10th. Please consider taking the opportunity to show your child the true spirit of giving at Christmas. Pack a shoe box with your child to send to needy children throughout the world. The children have lists of the suggested items, many of which can be purchased at a dollar store or at reasonable prices. Please be sure to put in only brand new items and include small toys ( no weapons), school supplies, stuffed animals and hygiene items. Most important is to pray over the box and for the child who will receive it. For more suggestions or to download a new form to go with the box, go to samaritanspurse.org. Also, include $7 in an envelope for shipping and handling.

Book Orders –  Our November, December and Holiday book order will be in the Monday Envelopes.  I will place the order online on November  21st.  If you want to order books for your child as a Christmas gift, just let me know  and I will hold them aside and give them to you in private.

We are excited to announce our first Holiday Boutique with Square Heart Shops. The gym will be packed with vendors selling handmade goods and many great items to make your Christmas shopping easy. Supporting our boutique, by shopping or being a vendor, will help raise funds for Fresno Christian and Square Heart Shops. Square Heart Shops is a non-profit organization that asks people to de-clutter their craft closets and donate items to be repurposed and sold to help people who want to adopt, go on mission trips or just need to learn a skill to earn an income. You can visit their website and learn more about their cause at www.squareheartshops.com. If you are interested in being a vendor or volunteering at the boutique, please contact Square Heart Shops directly at shopalot@squareheartshops.com. Vendor applications will be reviewed and accepted based on order received and items being sold.

Operation Christmas Child – This is a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about giving. Operation Christmas Child brought smiles to the faces of 100 million poor, sick and suffering children in more than 100 countries last year through shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, candy and other small gifts. But these boys and girls received something even more important than a Christmas present. They also leaned about the greatest gift of all—God’s son, Jesus Christ. Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers millions of shoebox gifts to children in desperate circumstances around the world. In addition to bringing happiness to boys and girls who other wise wouldn’t receive any presents, this exciting project of Samaritan’s Purse also opens doors for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ. Through children’s literature and evangelistic programs, many lives are changed for eternity. We would like to invite you to join us this year as we again reach out to boys and girls in the name of Jesus Christ for children who face a daily struggle against war, persecution, disease, natural disaster, poverty, illness, or neglect. Pray that God will meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The boxes are due on November 10th.

Reading – We continue to work on comprehension.  There is so much language processing involved in this activity. As the children move up in the grades, this skill is so very important. Continue to read and study vocabulary that is assigned. Studying vocabulary is critical to making good progress and some groups are struggling with this. About 5-10 minutes an evening will make a big difference, realizing some who struggle with visual memory might need to spend a little more time. These words are all in the stories so there is plenty of text practice with these words. Just studying the words in isolation will not put it into long term memory which is our goal.We will be  using more and more of our phonics skills to decode unknown text. We will also start incorporating our leveled readers along side our anthology. The leveled readers give lots of practice applying skills to words that have not been learned as vocabulary words.  There will also be more words using the ed and ing ending.

Writing – In the 2nd quarter we will be writing about an expository place,  incorporating all the elements of a good sentence as well as “dress up” words (adjectives) that make our writing more interesting and allows the reader to get a better mental picture.

Math -We are finishing Chapter 4 which is Data and Graphing. The chapter test will be on Wed, Oct. 22nd. The chapter review was  in the work envelope last Monday and is due on Oct 22nd as well. Please return it on time as we are working on becoming responsible learners. Please be faithful in doing Math drills at home. It will really pay off.

Social Science -We are working on Chapter 4 which is Our Changing World and connecting that to how life all around us changes.

Science – Our theme for October isPumpkins and Harvest. We will learn what pumpkins need to grow and the many different things you can do with a pumpkin. We will integrate this into our Math and writing as well. We are writing a pumpkin book on how a pumpkin grows and matures.

Show and Tell – This week is Team B. Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Book Bags and Work Envelopes – Just a continued reminder that book bags and work envelopes are due every Friday. Please assist your child in being responsible to return both ON TIME. Imagine that!!!  There are many who are forgetting. This is where the training begins for the older grades when turning in something late means a lower grade.

Bible – We will be studying  the Exodus out of Egypt for the Children of Israel.

Absences – The flu season is coming!!! If your child is sick or gone for more than one day, please call our office (292-7704) and come by the school to pick up your child’s missed work. If your child is gone only one day, I will send the missed work home on the day he/she returns. If they are gone 2 or more days, their work will be gathered and left with Mrs. Roberts. Just let me know when you want to pick it up.Also, if your child is leaving school early and you know ahead of time, please email me or send me a note so I can be sure your child has everything that is needed. This will be really helpful. I understand there are emergencies where this is not possible.

Operation Christmas Child – Our chapel on Tuesday will explain this wonderful opportunity. Report Cards – Report cards will go home this week.  At this stage of development , a letter grade of P which means progressing, is very acceptable in academic areas. It doesn’t mean your child isn’t doing an good job.If they knew everything at a satisfactory or excellent level in this stage of the game, I would be out of a job!!!!! However, the N’s in Character Development  are not. Your report card will say “Needs More Time”,for an N.

Simonian Farms – We will be going for our pumpkin field trip this year to Simonian Farms on Thursday, October 16th.. We will travel by bus, leaving at 9:45 AM and returning by 12:30 PM. The children have already paid through tuition and there is no charge for parents unless they want to buy a pumpkin. All are welcome to come. I will have a sign-up sheet outside our door if you are able to come, however, no siblings may come. This is a new rule this year.

Reading – We continue to work on comprehension, both stated and inferred. Inferential comprehension is extremely challenging for some. We will be working on this throughout the year. There is so much language processing involved in this activity. As the children move up in the grades, this skill is so very important. Continue to read and study vocabulary that is assigned. Studying vocabulary is critical to make good progress and some groups are struggling with thisAbout 5-10 minutes an evening will make a big difference, realizing some who struggle with visual memory might need to spend a little more time. These words are all in the stories so there is plenty of text practice with these words.  Just studying the words in isolation will not put it into long term memory which is our goal.

Dear Families,

Welcome back after a short week for the kiddos. Mrs. Devereaux did a great job on conferences and she was pleased and grateful for your participation and caring about your child’s education.

Lots of learning is taking place every day.  If your child’s Spelling, Dictation and Bible scores were low on your conference sheet that would be a hint to start working earlier in the week or even the weekend..  The amount of time it takes varies with each child.  Writing them at home is helpful and find what is most beneficial for your child.  Be sure you are practicing writing them and not just spell them out loud on the way to school. That is fine,  but you use a different part of your brain when you process through fine motor which is writing.

Power School – All the scores from Spelling, Bible Verse, Dictation and Conventions (periods, proper capitals). With the scores separated in Dictation and Copy it is easy to see what your child is struggling with and what kind of extra practice  is needed at home. Math Tests and Chapter Review are also recorded. Going over Word Builders at home a couple times a week will be very helpful. Remember these words only need to be blended and read, not spelled. Mrs.Devereaux is going a great job with Reading groups and progresses being made. Be faithful in reading each night the books that night. come home in the bags and the reading assignment and vocab each week. Most of our reading now is sight as we continue to build our phonetic skills.

Math -We are on  the chapter Addition and Subtraction to 10. Be faithful with the Math Drills. It will really pay off.The test for this chapter will be Thurs. Oct 2.  A chapter review will come home on Thursday which is due on the day of the test.

Social Science – We are working on Rules and Laws Rules, which will also be completed at the end of the month. God’s word has a lot to say about obeying laws.

Science – The children are enjoying the study of apples. We are working on an apple book as well. We are also learning what the different parts of the apple are called. On September 26th we will will have an apple tasting activity. A sign-up is on the door for the items needed. This is always a very fun activity.

Bible -. We will be studying Isaac – God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah. We will learn that God ALWAYS keeps his promises. This will be a continuation of last  week.

Show and Tell – This week is Team B. Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Field Trip On Wednesday, September 24th we will be going to Lost Lake for a Science field trip.We will travel by bus, leaving at 9:00 AM and returning to school by 12:30PM. The trip is divided into four stations and the children are divided into 4 groups. The docent does one of the stations. We will need THREE volunteers to run a station. There is a sign-up outside our door. It is very easy as they have all the directions and materials you will need. You will receive your station booklet before the trip. The kids have a wonderful time on this trip. All are welcome to attend and parents will drive in their cars. There is no fee for parents. The children have already paid. They say there is a $5 fee when entering the park but there has NEVER been anybody at the gate to collect. I doubt this year will be any different. But, just a heads up. Please send a lunch and drink with your child.

Grandparent’s DayFriday, October 3rd  is Grandparent’s Day. This is always a very fun time for the children. If you do not have grandarents that can attend, please feel free to invite a senior friend. We will also share grandparents for those who have none when we do our special activities. No one will be left out. More details and the schedule will be forthcoming.

Kid’s Club – It’s time to sign-up for the Fall Kids’ Clubs. Kids’ Clubs are fun and free activities led by parent volunteers during the second half of the lunch recess. Sign-up forms will be sent home on Monday and need to be completed and returned by Friday, September 19th. Students should get their forms in on time because the club’s fill up fast!

Boxtops For Education – This year we will again be participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive, we will be having a class contest. The class bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize.” We will post class totals monthly in the Office window and on our Campus News located on our website: fresnochristian.com. Please hand in your trimmed Box Tops in a Ziploc bag or envelope, labeled with your child’s/teacher’s name and the amount of Box Tops, to your teacher or school office. You can find a list of Box Tops online at: www.boxtops4education.com. Thank you for your support.
