We Are One: Growing in Christ

FCS Academic

Dear Families,

I wish you a time of relaxation, refreshment and thankfulness during this Thanksgiving week. Praise God from whom all blessings flow for His goodness to us!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD:

Thank you to everyone who brought an OCC box to school. We topped last year’s total! This year K-12 brought in 277 boxes that will be sent out all over the world to effect children for the gospel of Jesus Christ! Thank you for working together to make that happen. It was awesome to see students from Kindergarten to High School loading the boxes for delivery and praying together (as they surrounded the boxes) for the Lord to use these gifts to reach others!

TOGETHER WE CAN FOOD DRIVE:

We’re on week two for our school-wide canned food drive. Last year we brought in over 1,100 items of food. Our goal is to surpass that number. We can only do it with everyone’s help from K-12! As you’re doing your Thanksgiving shopping at Costco, Sam’s Club, or the grocery store, pick up some items from the list of food that we need to bring. Last year we provided dinners for over 100 families in Pinedale. Let’s reach that many families and more this year!

If you are interested in making a financial donation, please send cash/check to the office and designate “Food – Pinedale.”  We have a program with Food Maxx where we use scrip & S.H.A.R.E.S. so FCS also benefits!

If you have any questions, please contact Rob Foshee at rfoshee@fresnochristian.com .

Thanksgiving Unit  – We are learning about immigrants in Social Science and the contributions they have made to America.  Among the immigrants we study are the Pilgrims who sailed from England.  We will culminate our studies with a Thanksgiving Program with the Kindergartners. First Graders are the Pilgrims and the Kindergartners are the Indians. The boys should wear white shirts and dark pants and the girls should wear a dark dress or a skirt with a white blouse or shirt. Second Graders will be Americans. If you do not have these clothing items, please do not go out and buy anything. Just wear the closest thing you have. It will be just fine. The program will be on Tuesday, November 2rth at 10:45 A.M. at Student Ministries Center. Please do not enter the building until 10:30 because the high school students will be in there cleaning up. There is school in the afternoon, however, your child is free to go after the program to begin their Thanksgiving vacation.  For those who stay, we will be having a fun friday afternoon. If you know your child will not be here for the program, please let me know, as that will be helpful in preparing the groups for our program.  Thanks!

Christmas Traditions Poster – We will be celebrating Christmas around the world in December. Students will be making a poster depicting their family Christmas traditions. This can be magazine cut outs, pictures, or drawings from your child. You can find poster boards at stores such as Walmart, Target, Longs, Dollar Tree, and Rite-Aid. The children will be making their traditions poster at home and sharing it at school.  It will be due during the week of Dec. 2-6.  Your child can bring it on any of those days and we will share in the afternoons.  Be looking for a note in their take home folders in regards to this assignment.

Operation Christmas Child – Grades K-6 were able to help deliver the operation Christmas child boxes and pray over them before they were sent off. It was so great for the little ones and the high school students to come together!!

Dress Up Days
Student Council members demonstrate children like faith.  Please make note:
Dec. 6th-Stripes Day (Wear Striped Clothing). Student Council will have candy canes and the story of the candy cane and how the stripes represent Christ. Encouraging one another to Grow In Christ for God’s love through Jesus.
Thanksgiving Program:

The program will begin at 10:45 on Tuesday November 26th. Please do not enter the SMC until 10:30. The high school will be cleaning up from their chapel.

The Indians, Pilgrims and Americans are preparing for their wonderful program.  It won’t be long now. We will put our finishing touches to our part of the program this week. It will be lots of fun!!!!

books-rowLanguage Arts  We continue to read informational text from our theme work and practicing restating the question to form a complete sentence. We are learning to use pronouns to replace the longer nouns to make our sentences shorter. This type of work will continue throughout this quarter. In our seatwork, we have been doing many varied assignments and there is a vast difference in how quickly some accomplish tasks. These papers do not need to be finished and returned unless it says “Do”.  We will be starting Literature Studies beginning in January. This will be coupled with our Anthology books, and will give them more variety. Writing –Our next writing prompt will be on a Narrative about a personal experience with a beginning, middle and end with descriptive words. Benchmark assessments for this prompt will be in December.

apple_and_slateboardMath -We continue on Chapter 6 which is subtraction with regrouping. We worked very hard last week on this concept.  I believe all of the kids understand the process as I have worked with all of them individually at some point last week. When working with them at home, remind  your child to use the same process each time and you can’t go wrong. That process is looking at the second number in the ones column and seeing if it is bigger than the top number.  If it is, we regroup and if it is the same or smaller, there is no need to regroup.  We call that kind of problem first grade math, as they did much double digit adding and subtracting last year without regrouping.Their Friday homework this week will be practicing this skill.  Please check your child’s work so you can catch any mistakes they are making. Our test on this chapter will be Friday, Nov.22nd. We have worked very hard on this contract, however, not everyone will finish.  This will be a requirement since this is such an important concept and the foundation for much of their future math. If your child brings home an incomplete contract in their work envelope on Nov. 25th, it will need to be finished and returned by Dec. 6th. Please continue being faithful in doing a 4 minute Math Drill each night. Many received Math Awards last week.  Our goal is to have passed +18 by the end of the first semester, Dec. 13th.

Social Science –  Our unit is “Governing the People”.

thankfulBible –  We will be focusing on the theme of Thankfulness and being grateful to God for our many blessings.

girl-turkThanksgiving Celebration– Our Thanksgiving Blessing afternoon is Monday, November 25th. We will start with a Thanksgiving Feast at lunch time in  our room.  After lunch and recess we will be making a “Blessing Mix”, doing a craft and having dessert. The festivities will begin at 11:15 A.M. There is sign-up on the door  for the needed items for our meal.It will be a wonderful time!  Many Thanks! All are welcome!

thankskids2Thanksgiving Program – We are culminating our study of Pilgrims with a program for our families. Second Graders are the Americans and should wear red, white and blue. If you do not have these clothing items, please do not go out and buy anything. Just wear the closest thing you have. It will be just fine. The program will be on Tuesday, November 26th at 11:00 A.M. at SMC Main.  It should be lots of fun. Some have asked if they can take their child after the end of the program and that will be fine if that works best for you. It will not be a heavy academic afternoon!!!!!

Show and Tell – This week is Team B.  Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Homework Folder and Envelopes   Please be faithful in returning these every Friday.  It makes organizing their work so much faster if we have the envelopes. The book  project for November is due on Nov. 25th, even though the Rubric paper you got says Nov.22nd.  I just wanted to give a little extra time for those who needed it. Your child may still bring it with their Homework Folder on Friday, Nov. 22nd if you wish. Just a reminder that it is a Mystery book. No points will be given if it is just a picture book. The folder for this project came home in the Homework Folder on Friday, Nov. 8th for those who had not already requested it.  There will be NO Book Project for December. January genre will be Poetry. The homework and  Reading Log coming home on Nov. 22 will be for the first week of December. There will be no new assigned homework for Thanksgiving week.

Book-It – Book-Its for November are due Mon. Dec. 2nd. Twelve entries will earn a pizza certificate.

gby002TOGETHER WE CAN –  We will be having a K-12 project that helps those in need  during the holidays. You will receive a handout in the Work Envelopes on Tuesday, Nov. 12th. This program will run through Dec 6th. Please check the list of items that we are collecting before you go shopping or raid your pantry. We’re calling it “TOGETHER WE  CAN!”  All of our collections will be benefiting the Pinedale community. Our High School has a “Book Buddy” program with Pinedale already. Please bring your items to our classroom and we will have a big red bucket to put them in. It is a great opportunity for our children to share with those in need!! We are having a contest between the classes as well,, so let’s work hard for those in need first and maybe even a prize for us at the end.

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all men.The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome

[a] it.

WEEK 3:

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

WEEK 4:

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

Mrs. R’s Super Stars November 12th, 2013

Hello Parents,

I hope you all had a great 3 day weekend, spending time with your families! Thanksgiving is right around the corner! I can’t believe how fast these holidays are coming.

This week in Mrs. Super Stars:

Bible: We will continue focusing on Thankfulness for the Thanksgiving season. We will discuss as a class all the things we have to be thankful for, and learn that everything we have is because of the graciousness of our Lord.

Memory verse

I will extol the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.

Psalm 34:1 (20pts.)

Language Arts: This week the students will be learning about plural words with -s and -es. Students will practice writing singular and plural words in their spelling book. In our guided reading groups we are continuing to cover the setting of a story and main characters. Students are also working on retelling the story in their own words. They are practicing telling me what happens first, next, and last in a story. We will continue going over all of these during our guided reading groups. In our writing we are focusing on writing about a place. The students are practicing making complete sentences. They are focusing on editing their own paper. This means making sure all their sentences start with a capital letter, all the rest are lower case, they are finger spacing between each word, and they end all their sentences with a period.

Social Science: We will be learning about pilgrims and Indians to prepare for our thanksgiving program.

There is school in the afternoon, however, your child is free to go after the program to begin their Thanksgiving vacation.  For those who stay, we will be having a fun friday afternoon. If you know your child will not be here for the program, please let me know, as that will be helpful in preparing the groups for our program.  Thanks!
