October Newsletter, Mrs Ferguson

October

I enjoyed meeting with all of you at Parent/Teacher conferences last week!!  Thank you all for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet with me. I appreciated all of your kind words and encouragement and I hope you know what a blessing your children are to me! I am encouraged to see the growth of your children spiritually, academically and socially throughout this school year!

FALL FESTIVAL

Our fall festival this year will take place on October 19th from 12:00 PM-3:00 on the North Field. Bring your blanket or chairs and come enjoy the food and fun!  This is a great time for family and friend’s fun!

END OF THE FIRST QUARTER

The first quarter concludes Friday, Oct. 11th.  Grades will be finalized and posted the following week on Tuesday, October 15th for your printing purposes.

Please check your child’s grades on Powerschool this week, as they might have changed since we spoke at parent conferences.  I have some students who are missing assignments and also a few who have tests that should be made up.  Please check your child’s communication folder this week for any assignments that need to be turned in. If your child has a test to re-take or has any assignments they want to re-correct please have them to me by Tuesday, October 8th.   I will not be accepting re-correct assignments after October 8th. Thanks for your help!!

BIBLE

Last week we celebrated “See You at the Pole” with grades K-6 and it was nice to hear the students pour out their hearts to God as one student body.  We are so blessed to be able to pray on a daily basis. We continue to enjoy our morning time with prayer and worship as a class.  We are learning to be grateful for this time because we know that only at a Christian school can we take time out of our morning to worship and give thanks to Him. I have even had students ask if we could worship at the end of the day and we have enjoyed this on occasion as well.

In Bible we just finished our study of Hebrew writing and the divisions of the Old Testament.  This month we will be looking at the books of Genesis, Exodus and Numbers.

 MATH

We will be having a TEST this WEDNESDAY over Chapter 2 on Addition and Subtraction Properties.  The Pre-test will come home today and be due back on Wednesday to help us prepare for our test. Please review it with your child and help them to fix any mistakes.

Next week we will begin Chapter 3 on Relating Multiplication and Division.  If your child has yet to master their multiplication facts please work with them at home! We are doing flash cards in class but your extra help at home really helps!  This is crucial in helping them prepare for multiplication with whole numbers and long division in the chapters to come. Chapter 3 Test will be towards the end of this month.

READING

In the next two weeks we will be finishing up our literature study, On the Banks of Plum Creek and then begin reading our next novel titled, Blue Willow.  This story ties into our Social Studies unit and the setting takes place in the Central Valley!  Students must respond in complete sentences and must re-state the question as we have been doing in class. They must also use proper grammar and structure, and best handwriting to receive full credit.  They are reminded of this daily. 🙂

BOOK PROJECTS

Just a reminder that your child’s first book project is due THIS Thursday, October 3rd! Projects not turned in on time will be docked one full letter grade.

Our next genre of literature will be to read a biography about a famous person.  A biography consists of factual stories about real people from the past or present.  These will be coming home NEXT week and will be due on Wednesday, November 20th. Some students have already chosen their book from the library.

The assignment will be to complete a “scrapbook page” using a 28 X 22 poster board. Please see the rubric for detailed instructions and grading information.  They will be shown sample projects from previous years in class and you are welcome to check them out as well.

READING COUNTS

Just a reminder that students were expected to take and pass 5 quizzes this quarter for the Reading Counts program to receive full credit as part of their reading grade. Their goal is to reach at least 25 points per quarter! Many have surpassed this and some are close to or have already reached 100 points! Way to go!  They will have the same goal 2nd quarter, which is to read 5 books and gain another 25 points for Reading Counts! Their top 5 quizzes will be recorded as part of their reading grade as well.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Our focus of study in Chapter 2 was on the Native people and tribal groups who lived in California.  We completed our study last week and will take our first TEST this FRIDAY, October 7th.  Students have workbook pages coming home today and a study guide that they will complete in class this week that they can use to help them study for the test. Please review it with them.

In Chapter 3 we’ll look at the explorers and those who eventually settled in this state.  The mission system will also be included in this chapter.

CALIFORNIA DOUGH MAPS

This THURSDAY afternoon we will be making our California Dough Maps from approximately 1:15-2:45. Please make sure your child brings in a heavy piece of cardboard measuring 12 X 18 as soon as possible so we can glue the maps down before Thursday. Have them write their name on the back.  Thank you to those who signed up to bring supplies.  Please send them in by Tuesday or Wednesday so we can prepare the dough. If you signed up to help with the maps please arrive by 1:15. THANKS!!

 WRITING

We have worked very hard this quarter in writing and will be taking our first writing benchmark assessment this month. Your child will be tested on Expository Writing: Summary of a Story.  They have read familiar folktales and stories and have learned to use a Summary Map to help them in writing their summary.

Beginning 2nd quarter we will be focusing on writing a personal narrative on an event or an experience in their lives.  They will be taught to write a beginning paragraph which will include the characters and setting, a middle paragraph with the events, supporting facts or details to help the reader imagine the event or experience and an ending that ties it all together.  We will continue to review correct grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.  Students will also learn how to use the rubric to see the expectations and to grade their own writing.  Benchmark writing assessments will be in December.

 SCIENCE

This week we will complete our study on Polar Habitats by doing an experiment with ice.  We have already learned about the Rainforest, Grasslands, and Desert habitats and will begin our last study of habitats covering the Ocean next week.  We will learn about a salt-water habitat, tide pools, and giant kelp ocean forests.  We will also study about the open ocean and animals that have adapted to live in salt water.  We will be doing a salt-water experiment in class.  We will study two big groups of fish:  those with a skeleton of bones and those with a skeleton of cartilage.  We will learn about how mammals in the ocean breathe with lungs. Our study will also include water birds. This unit will prepare us for our field trip next month to Monterey Bay Aquarium. See details below.

MONTEREY FIELD TRIP

Fish in aquarium

This year both 3rd & 4th grade classes will be taking a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium as part of our culminating study on ocean habitats! We will be leaving on Thursday, Nov. 7th at 6:00 AM and returning at 5:30 PM by charter bus! If you would like to chaperone this field trip, please e-mail or send me a note.  You are also welcome to follow the bus by car.  The cost for parent chaperones to enter the aquarium will be $20 if you pay in advance as part of our group rate.  You will need to send your money to the Central Office no later than October 31st. Those who choose not to pay in advance as part of our group will have to pay the full price admission of $34.95 at the door.  The following parents have told me they would like to attend:

Thank you to those of you who help so faithfully in the classroom.  We couldn’t accomplish all the things we do without you!!!

Our theme this week is “All About Me”.  Our character trait is  “contentment”, being happy or satisfied with who we are (i.e. The way God made us) and with what we have (the things God has given us).  Even as adults, we struggle with this at times. When your child brings his/her “Me” book home on Friday, please be sure to read and discuss it together.  You may learn some new things about your little one.

Our verse this week is “God is love,”  I John 4:8.

We are going to the Hillcrest Pumpkin Patch the morning of Friday, October 18 from 8:00– 12:00. We are taking a bus. Let us know if you can chaperone.

Saturday, October 19, is our PTF Fall Festival from 12-3 on our football field.  More info later!

Our trip to Jordyn’s Farm is Friday, October 25 from 8:00 –12:00. Everyone is welcome to see the DeGroot dairy farm and have lots of fun! We will ride a bus.

Mrs. R’s Super Stars September 30th, 2013

Dear Families,

I can hardly believe that October is here! Time has flown by so fast. Thank you all for coming to our parent teacher conferences, I trust you all learned some great information about your child’s academic growth. I look forward to seeing the progress through this next quarter.

PARENT HELPERS: Be sure to check which day you have signed up to help in the month of October! Also, the Lord has blessed me with wonderful parent helpers this year! In order to allow everyone some time to volunteer in our class please do not sign up for anymore than 4 days in 1 month. If I am in need of extra help I will send out an email requesting parent helpers on certain days. Thank you for understanding!!

This week in Mrs. R’s Super Stars:

Language Arts: We have just finished up all the short vowel sounds in our spelling. We will move on to learning new word endings with double consonants. The children are continuing to grow everyday and move quickly through their reading levels! I am so impressed by their growth since the beginning of school! In regards to the books being sent home, please know that these texts should be pretty simple for them to read. Its about repetition. The more they read, and recognize words, the more confident they will become. This repetition will also help improve their fluency. When you need new books please send the books back to school in their take home folder (inside the plastic bag) and I will replace them with new ones.

Math: We will continue in our unit on Subtraction. The students are moving quickly, and picking things up easily! Our math curriculum moves very quickly and I am pleased with their progress! This class loves math!

Social Studies: We will begin our study on “Our changing world”

Science: We will continue to look at living things, and harvest for the month of October.

Bible –  This week we will be learning about Joseph

Fall Festival: Our fall festival this year will take place on October 19th from 12:00pm-3:00pm @ the FCS field. Bring your blanket or chairs and come enjoy the food and fun! This is a great time for fellowship and family fun!!

Single Palm Pumpkin Patch–  We will be going to Single Palm Pumpkins on Thursday, Oct. 24th.  1st and 2nd grade will be going on the trip together. We will learn about the growth of pumpkins, see farm animals, take a tractor pulled hay ride, do a  hay and corn maze and pick a large pumpkin from the vine.  The chaperones will cut the pumpkins off the vine for the children. We will be riding the bus, leaving at 10:30 AM and returning by 2:00 PM.  We will have lunch there at the farm.  The children have already paid and the chaperones are free.  If a chaperone wants to pick a pumpkin to take home the cost will be $5.00. I will be sending home a liability agreement that is required by Single Palm. Please be sure to return this before the field trip. Each child is required to have one.

Dear Families,

Fall is finally here, and the weather is starting to cool off! yeah!!! Our trip to Lost Lake was a success with all the parents who were able to come and help!

A QUICK REMINDER! PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES ARE THIS WEEK. WE ARE ON HALF DAY SCHEDULE ALL WEEK!

*** In honor of International Dot Day, and celebrating creativity and encouragement at FCS, Student Council has elected to make Friday, Sept., 27, spirit day clothing as “DOTS”! In lieu of the FCS spirit shirt, please wear clothing with dots:  shirts, shorts, socks, shoes, bows.

Character Builder: This week we are still focusing on first time obedience. I am wanting the children to learn that this not only applies at school but at home as well. This is still hard for some, but I trust with practice and patience the Lord will teach each child.

Language Arts:  We  be reviewing many of our short vowel sounds that we have been practicing in our spelling book. The students are doing amazing with me during our guided reading groups. Although I have chosen some text that may be difficult for them to read, it is the perfect chance for me to see if they are using reading strategies. I was able to attend a handwriting seminar last week and I learned a lot of wonderful information! I hope to try and incorporate this into our classroom soon!

Math: We are still working hard with our subtraction concepts

Science: This week we will be finishing up Unit 1 of living things.

Bible: This week we will be learning about Jacob

Take Home Folders: Please remember to look in your child’s folder everyday. Empty out any work that stays at home. Some folders are starting to fill up with old work, and it makes it hard to keep notes and new work in there.

Dear Parents,                                              September 23, 2013

Apples, apples, apples!!!!  We all love apples!  This week we will learn all we can about APPLES!! We’ll make apple wreaths, apple turnovers and learn about Johnny Appleseed.  We will enjoy the story about his life and how the Lord led him to plant apple seeds throughout our new country. We hope your child will read his/her apple books to you.

This week I will be having parent/teacher conferences.  Please try to be prompt since the conferences are tightly scheduled and are only 20 minutes each.  Thank you.  If you are unsure of your conference day and time, please ask me. Conferences are held in my classroom.

Our Bible verse this week is “Forgive us our sins” Luke 11:4. Our character trait is contentment – being happy with what God has given us and how He has made us.  Our sight word is  “and”.

We are sending information about Samaritan’s Purse OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD shoeboxes.  This is a great ministry opportunity for you and your child to participate in.  The shoeboxes are due in November.

We are going to the Pumpkin Patch the morning of October 18 from 8:00 -12:00.  This is a delightful time of learning about harvest and the fall season.  We take a hike, have a hayride, choose a pumpkin, and eat our lunch.  Please tell me if you can chaperone for this trip. See attached flyer.

Also don’t forget… Wednesday, October 16 is a half day (Teacher Inservice)  Everyone 8:00 – 12:00.

We Are One: Growing in Christ

FCS Academic

Dear Parents,

I’m looking forward to meeting with you during parent-teacher conferences this week. Remember that school is dismissed at 12:00 noon each day.

STUDENT COUNCIL DOT DAY:

In honor of International Dot Day, and celebrating creativity and encouragement at FCS, Student Council has elected to make Friday, Sept., 27, spirit day clothing as “DOTS”! In lieu of the FCS spirit shirt, please wear clothing with dots:  shirts, shorts, socks, shoes, bows.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION:

This year we will again be participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive, we will be having a class contest. The class bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize.” We will post class totals monthly in the Office window and on our Campus News located on our website: fresnochristian.com. Please hand in your trimmed Box Tops in a Ziploc bag or envelope, labeled with your child’s/teacher’s name and the amount of Box Tops, to your teacher or school office. You can find a list of Box Tops online at: www.boxtops4education.com. Thank you for your support.

WRITING:

Students will have the opportunity to work on their “Response to Literature” requirement for the September mystery book which is due Monday, September 30.

READING:

Students will read a book from a different genre each month. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum  of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework. The genre for the month of October is science fiction. Students should show their selected science fiction book to me for approval.

MATH:

The 5th grade will continue Chapter 2: Addition, Subtraction and Equations. The 6th grade will begin Chapter 2: Data Analysis and Statistics.

SCIENCE:

We continue our Plant Science unit with a look at the structure of plant cells under microscopes and an experiment with phototropism.

BIBLE:

We continue our study of the Bible, focusing on the Books of Poetry: Psalms, Proverbs and Job.

BIBLE MEMORY VERSE:

The memory verse for this week is Titus 33:5 and the test will be this Friday, September 27. Students will be graded on writing the verse accurately, including correct wording, spelling, grammar and the scripture reference.

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.

 Titus 3:5

Dear Families,

Fall has arrived!!! What a beautiful season of the year…..my favorite!!!!!  Now, if only the temperature would cooperate, we would be in business. We are looking forward to October in Room 524.  The first quarter is coming to a close  and the children are adjusting well . So much progress has already been made and you  will be excited to see your child’s growth at conference time. I look forward to sharing with you this week.

Apple with booksLanguage Arts –  We are working on topic sentences and identifying supporting details. Comprehension now is not just basic facts, but inferring from the text the hidden meaning.  This is challenging for some, however, this is the kind of comprehension that comprises more of our work now, as we move along in second grade.

images-12Math – Our Math Test on Chapter 2 will be Tuesday, Sept 24th.. We will then be on Data and Graphing. Be sure to keep the family letter for each chapter, as it has the vocabulary words that are  introduced in each chapter. Please continue being faithful in doing Math Drills as well. One four minute drill an evening is plenty and if consistent you will see the pay off.  When Math facts are memorized it just makes work in our contract so much smoother and more easily mastered.

basket-of-applesScience – We will be completing our apple unit next week. On Thursday, Oct 3rd, we will culminate our study with an apple tasting activity.  We will also bob for apples.  Many of the children did not know what this was. It will be lots of fun!!!!  Please sign up outside our door if you can provide any apple items for us to taste. We will graph our results.

Social Science We wil have our first test on Wednesday, September 25th.  The chapter review that went hone on Wednesday, September 18th will be due on that day as well.  Please help your child study using the chapter review.

Bible –  We will be studying Jacob.

Show and Tell – This week is Team B.  Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

school_bagHomework Folders and Work Envelopes – Please assist your child in being responsible to return both on time, which is by Friday of each week.

Homework  Folder  Because of a Math test and Social Science test this week, there were no skill sheets in the Homework Folder on Friday, Sept. 20th. The chapter reviews for both of these will take the place of their normal skill sheets. Our first book project is due Friday, September 27th.   On that day also, the children will bring home in their homework folder the requirements and due date for their 2nd project which will be October 25th. Work Envelopes  will NOT be coming home on Monday. You will see your child’s work during conferences this week.

Field Trip – We will be going to Single Palm Pumpkins on Thursday, Oct. 24th. The children have already paid and the chaperones are free  If a chaperone wants to pick a pumpkin to take home the cost will be $5.00.

Dot Day -In honor of International Dot Day, and celebrating creativity and encouragement at FCS, Student Council has elected to make Friday, Sept. 27, spirit day clothing as “DOTS”! In lieu of the FCS spirit shirt, please wear clothing with dots:  shirts, shorts, socks, shoes, bows.
