welcome

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!

WELCOME NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS!!!! I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing summer! I am so excited about our new year and the many exciting things that are going to take place!! This is going to be a GREAT class of 4th graders.  I believe God has placed each one of them in here for a reason and I am looking forward to seeing what He will do this year. Thank you for entrusting these precious ones into my care and I look forward to getting to know each of you better as well!

Our school theme this year is “WE ARE ONE: Growing In Christ”  Our school verse this year comes from Ephesians 4: 15-16:

“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

This verse has been posted in our classroom to serve as a daily reminder.  My prayer this year is that your child will feel God’s unconditional love and that they will be united as one with their classmates and school!

STUDENT PROFILE

This week I am sending home a STUDENT PROFILE concerning family, school, and religious experiences. This gives you the opportunity to share areas and concerns you would like me to be aware of as I work with your child this year.  Some of you completed this last year as a 3rd grade parent in my class, so it will be optional for those not wanting to make any changes. Please take time to fill out the profile this week and return it by THIS Friday.  At conference time we can focus on strengths and areas for future growth together. Thanks for your insights.

NEWSLETTERS

At any time you may go online to read our class newsletter. Click on K-6, class newsletter and then Mrs. Ferguson. The newsletter will contain our weekly character trait, Bible verse, spelling words, various homework assignments such as book reports and special activities like field trips.

On Monday, you will also want to look for your child’s graded work from the previous week.  Please take the opportunity to go through the work together.

COMMUNICATION FOLDER

Each student will be given a communication folder that will be sent home on Mondays and needs to be returned each Thursday.   Please look in your child’s folder for your child’s graded work from the previous week, newsletters, flyers, Bible and spelling lists for the month. Please take the opportunity to go through the work together and correct any mistakes.  Please return the folder every Thursday.  This will be part of your child’s effort grade for responsibility.

Also, any work not completed in class, such as math, reading or spelling, is considered homework and needs to be returned the following day.  For those of you who had me last year, there will NOT be weekly assignments sent home Mondays, but students will be required to complete unfinished assignments outside of class. Thank you!

BIBLE

Each day we start off the morning with prayer requests, praise and worship, devotionals, and studying God’s Word.  I am so grateful that we are at a school where this can be our main focus.  My goal is that your child will see the importance of spending time daily in God’s Word as they allow His truth to guide them.

The Bible verse may be accessed online and will also be sent home each month. It will focus on a specific character trait verse.  Our verses this year will be from the NIV version as this correlates to the Bible they use at school. Bible verse tests are also on Fridays, every week, unless a field trip is scheduled and in that case the test will be on Thursday.  All students will be asked to write from memory the Character Trait, Reference, and Bible Verse.  Most importantly, we hope to see growth in these character qualities as our students learn God’s word and apply these truths to their lives.

Each child was also given a prayer journal that they can use to write and reflect on our daily class devotions, our morning worship times and any other personal thoughts they might like to jot down.

SPELLING TESTS

You may access the spelling lists online each week or look at the hard copy I send home monthly. Please start practicing your Bible verse and spelling words early to ensure good results on Fridays.  Spelling trial tests are given on Wednesdays and students achieving 100% will not need to take the Friday final test.  Each week “BONUS” words will be given for those students who are good spellers and like an additional challenge.  These words are not mandatory…the student may choose to do them or not. Bonus words missed do not take away from the score of the 20 regular words, but do help a student if his or her quarterly grade is borderline.

Along with our weekly spelling test grades, students will have a Friday sentence dictation grade.  This gives the students an opportunity to practice using their spelling words in context and improve writing skills needed for compositions.  Every 5 weeks the students will have a multiple choice test over the previous 5 weeks of spelling words. These questions are similar to SAT testing questions so they are great practice for the students. There will be no Pre-test or dictation sentences on these weeks.

SUPPLIES

Supplies provided in class:

Students have been given colored folders for their class assignments, a journal, colored pencils, crayons, a pencil, a large eraser, a dry erase board, a dry erase marker and a white board eraser.

Supplies recommended to purchase:

1.  Only ONE medium sized pencil box (plastic, no larger than 5″x 8″)

2.  Highlighter

3.  Set of felt pens or washable markers (optional)

4.  A Franklin Electronic Dictionary (optional)

NOTE: Please help your child to succeed by limiting unnecessary clutter and distractions.  Some children bring so many things that they are burdened by their supplies and some use them as toys.  In this case they will be asked to take them home. Thank you!

**We are also in need of lots of Kleenex and some disinfectant wipes for the classroom.  We use both throughout the year.  If you are able to donate any of these items, please send them to school with your child. Thank you!  🙂

Power School offers a variety of information including attendance, grades, and special notes to parents.  This is a SECURE website and therefore you, as a parent, may access your child’s information confidentially.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PROCEDURES

School begins at 8:00 AM sharp.  Students who arrive later than 8:00 AM must report to the office for a tardy slip.  Students go directly to the play area north of building 5 in the mornings starting Tuesday.  After the 7:55 AM bell and whistle, they will line up with their class near the picnic tables and I will escort them to class.

School ends at 2:45 P.M.   Please arrange pick up promptly.  Children not picked up by 3:00 P.M. will be taken to the office to call parents and wait.  The pick-up location at the People’s campus is between Building 5 and the Peoples Church preschool playground near the ship. All children must wait with the teacher until an adult walks over to pick them up.  Due to safety concerns they may not go and meet you at your car. Please let me know if you need special arrangements made.

**Please take note of the NEW entrances for drop off and pick up beginning tomorrow.

BIRTHDAYS

Children will be honored individually on their birthdays. Each child will have his/her own day to celebrate. You may bring a treat and drink if you choose. Your child and you may choose and there are no restrictions, whatever is a favorite to your child. I do ask that you not bring anything with peanuts due to peanut allergies.  We will have celebrations in the afternoons at 2:30 PM, just before school gets out or at 9:40 just before recess.  Please let me know a few days ahead of time if you want to celebrate at school. It certainly is not mandatory, however, the children really do enjoy celebrating with their friends. If your child has a summer birthday, he/she will not be forgotten. We will find a day for them. It can be on their half birthday or any day that works for you.

BOOK ORDERS

Book orders are sent home monthly. Scholastic publishes excellent books and software for children at a moderate price. Please do not feel obligated to make a purchase. I will be sending home the information for online ordering.  I will not be accepting checks or cash. The first book order was sent home today and will be due on September 1st if you wish to order. Mrs. Vander Kooi August 12, 2013

FCS Academic

Dear Parents,

I’m thrilled to be teaching 5th and 6th grades this year and am so thankful to God for this opportunity to get to know your child better. I’m looking forward to a fabulous year with Vander Kooi’s Joys!

Our schoolwide theme for this year is “We Are One: Growing in Christ” which comes from Ephesians 4:15-16: “Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” Please pray with me that we will grow this year in becoming more Christ-like, full of love for one another as we work together in his service.

CONVOCATION:

Please join us on Monday, August 12 from 8:00-8:30 A.M. in Peoples Church sanctuary as we begin the year with an inspiring convocation led by Superintendent Debbie Siebert and our high school worship team. All students are expected to attend and parents, grandparents, etc. are more than welcome to join us.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT:

I look forward to meeting each of you at Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 20, when I will share further details about our 5th/6th year.

Student Planners will not be  provided by the school this year. Families are strongly encouraged to purchase a planner so that students can record daily assignments.

Contact: If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at  jvanderkooi@fresnochristian.com. You may also send a note with your child. I will check emails after school each day and occasionally during the day, as time allows. In the event of an emergency, please call the elementary secretary, Kerry Roberts, at 299-1695 extension 103.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL:

Beginning on Tuesday morning, students should go directly to the blacktop area north of Building 5 and east of Building 6.  After the 7:55 A.M. bell and whistle, they will line up with their classmates and I will escort them to class.

School begins at 8:00 A.M. sharp. Students who arrive later than 8:00 A.M. must report to the elementary office as classroom doors are kept locked at all times.

School ends at 2:45 P.M. Please arrange pick up promptly. Children not picked up by 3:00 P.M. will be taken to the elementary office to call parents and wait. The pick-up location is at the pirate ship on the west side of Building 5. All children must wait with the teacher until an adult walks over to pick them up. They may not go and meet you at your car.

There have been some changes in the dress code.  Please refer to the student handbook to familiarize yourself with these changes.  Teachers have been asked to check daily for those who are not adhering to the current dress code.

MILK AND JUICE:

Milk and juice will be offered for K-6 students and are 40 cents each. You may purchase a milk or juice card for $8.00 each. Each card is good for 20 drinks. These are available in the Elementary Office. You will be notified when it is time to purchase a new one. This is offered as a convenience to you and is not mandatory.

SUPPLIES PROVIDED IN CLASS:

Students will be given color-coded subject area folders, notebooks, lined paper, colored pencils, felt pens, pens, pencils, an eraser, a dry erase marker, a white erase board with its eraser, and a ruler. If you are wondering what to purchase for your child, I recommend the following:

1. Pencil box
2. Highlighter

ELECTRONICS:

Electronic devices such as dictionaries, I-pads, notebooks, and computers may be utilized at school for learning only. This means electronic devices MAY NOT be out at school unless students are instructed to do so by their teacher. No overnight storage is available  so students will need to take them to and from school on a daily basis. A technology use form will be reviewed with the students and sent home for your signature of approval.

HUME LAKE FOR 6TH GRADERS:

This year we will be going to Hume Lake for 6th grade camp October 14-18 to study Outdoor Education. More details will be given later. Please contact Mr. Broersma at jbroersma@fresnochristian.com if you would like to be a counselor for the week. The spots fill up quickly. There is a fee that you will need to pay for room and board for the week. More information will be given to you at Back to School Night.

ASSESSMENTS:

I will be using a variety of assessments in class this week and next in the areas of reading, writing, and math.  These assessments are not graded but will assist me in the preparation of future lessons. Each child should bring a book to read when they finish their assessments. Books are also available in the classroom library.

BIRTHDAY TREATS:

Birthdays are special to all of us and we want to celebrate your child’s birthday by singing to them and praying for them for the year and for their future. Parents may bring an easy-to-eat treat on the special day which will be served prior to morning recess. This Wednesday we will celebrate June , July and beginning of August birthdays and I will provide the treat. Belated birthday wishes go to Megan Grimmius, Logan Lewis, Matthew Peterson, Janae Shew and Jayden Wood.

Please be sure to alert me as well as the elementary office of any allergies or health concerns you have about your child.

RECESS, SNACKS  and P.E.:

Recess is scheduled every day in the morning from 9:50 to 10:10 and after lunch from about 12:00-12:30. Snacks may be eaten during the morning recess. Because of various children’s food allergies, we are not allowed to share or trade food. Each class will have P.E. twice a week. Be sure to have your child wear appropriate clothes and shoes that are for workouts. Water bottles are required and should be brought to school and kept at your child’s desk.

ELECTIVES:

Elective forms will be sent home on Monday and should be turned in by Wednesday, August 14 with a parent signature. Students will be given their first choice whenever possible, but should select 2nd and 3rd choices as well since some classes fill up.

SPIRIT WEAR:

Students should wear their FCS shirts on Fridays to show their school spirit.  Please be sure to have them wear their FCS class shirt, once it is printed, on field trips, too.

MONTHLY READING:

My goal this year is to make reading enjoyable for all students through a balanced reading program. We will approach our learning through a variety of engaging methods.  Students will be asked to read a book from a different genre each month. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum  of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework. Whenever possible, I recommend that students choose books to read from the Reading Counts Program. After completion of the book, the student can take a computer quiz to earn reading points. They may earn points for other appropriate books not on the quiz list by completing one of the response forms I have available. They should show these books to me for approval. The first book for the first month of school is a free choice genre.

BIBLE:

This week we will discuss ways to show respect to one another and ways to handle conflict. Students will collaborate on “respect agreements” which will help them better understand what respect is and how to demonstrate this quality at all times.

SCRIPTURE MEMORY VERSE:

Students will memorize scripture weekly and take a written test each Friday. The memory verse for this week is Ephesians 4:15 and the test will be this Friday, August 16. Students will be graded on writing the verse accurately, including correct wording, spelling, grammar and the scripture reference.

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.       Ephesians 4:15

SPELLING:

Students will be given a word list each Monday  along with activities for defining, dividing the words into syllables, and practicing the words. Students in 5th grade will study the first fifteen words and students in 6th grade will study all twenty words. All students may take the Challenge Words for extra credit.

Spelling words are tested each Friday. Please be sure your child has a dictionary (hard copy or online) available at home. Lesson 1 words will be tested this Friday, August 16.

welcome

Dear Families,

WELCOME BACK -I am delighted to have your child in my class this year and we are looking forward  to a wonderful  second  grade year together.  Newsletters will be posted online every Monday. You will be informed of specific class activities, areas of curriculum study and the list of Spelling words and Bible Verse for that week.  On the first Monday of each month, all the Spelling words and Bible Verses for that month will come home printed up on a theme paper.  This way you will have all the month’s work for Spelling and Bible Verses at a glance and available. This allows those students who need extra time to have them in advance. I am excited to begin our journey together in second grade.  TALLYS TREASURES ROCK!!!!!

schools_onPlease note a few items of importance to you and your second grader.

Snacks: Snacks may be eaten during the morning recess.  Fruit, veggies, crackers, cheese, chips, yogurt, raisins and fruit snacks are some suggestions.  We will save our dessert foods for lunch.  Because of various children’s food allergies, we are not allowed to share or trade food.

. School Box: Please send a pencil box that is approximately 9 x 6 x 3 inches to hold pencils, crayons, glue sticks, erasers and scissors. Larger boxes will not fit in our cubbies because of our big books and other classroom supplies.

Backpacks: Please send a full sized backpack with your child every day.  It can have wheels if so desired, as we keep them behind our chairs.

Dry Erase Boards: We do a lot of word work, phonic sounds and mental math on our boards,  which the children keep in their cubbies. Please send a white sock to be used as an eraser.  We then store our pens in our socks so we don’t lose them.  Imagine that,  second  graders losing something!!!!

Dress Code – There have been some changes in the dress code.  Please refer to the student handbook to familiarize yourself with these changes.  Teachers have been asked to check daily for those who are not adhering to the current dress code.

beeberShow and Tell: We will begin show and tell the first week of school. Everyone can share one time during the first week of school. Beginning the second week of school, each student will have the opportunity to share every other week.  Anything that is meaningful to your child is acceptable.  Be creative!!!  Team A will share the week of Aug 19-22 and Team B will share the week of Aug.26 – Aug. 30.

Classroom Behavioral Expectations: In order for our classroom to run smoothly we will be discussing the rules that we need to follow in order for that to be accomplished.  The children will be brainstorming and role-playing to create our rules.  We will be discussing self-control, respecting rights and property of others, listening without interrupting, cooperating with others, first time obedience and demonstrating positive attitudes and effort. We will be making classroom Care Agreements which will be posted in our classroom.

birthday1-thumb Birthdays: Children will be honored individually on their birthdays.  Each child will have his/her own day to celebrate.  You may bring a treat and drink if you choose. Your child and you may choose and there are no restrictions, whatever is a favorite to your child.  We usually do our celebrations at 2:20 PM.  If it is in the warmer weather, we go out to the picnic tables and in the cooler weather we celebrate inside.  Just let me know a few days ahead of time if you want to celebrate at school.  It certainly is not mandatory, however, the children really do enjoy celebrating with their friends.  If your child has a summer birthday, he/she will not be forgotten.  We will find a day for them.  It can be on their half birthday or any day that works for you.

Fire Drills: We will be having emergency fire drills monthly and we will be practicing several times during the first few weeks of school.  You may want to reinforce and discuss the need for these with your child at home as well.

gby002 Classroom Helpers: Sign-ups for morning classroom helpers will be on our outside door.  Please stop by to choose a day you are available to assist.  Helpers are used during Language Arts Block Monday-Thursday  from 8:30 -10:15 and in Math from  10:40 – 11:30.  No parent helpers are used on Fridays. There may be some more days that I will need parent help in the afternoons for writing, but at this point I do not know yet which day/days that will be.

P.E. HelpersWe are blessed to have Mrs. Whipple for P.E. once a week. Since we have a longer day, there is time in our schedule for another P.E. time.  I would love it if we could get 4 dads to assist with this second P.E. class, so it would mean a time commitment of once a month. The day that is open for us is  Tuesdays at 2:00 PM.  I will have a sign up on our door if you can help with this.

images books Book Orders: Book and software orders are sent home monthly.  Scholastic publishes excellent books and software for children at a moderate price.  Please do not feel obligated to purchase. Our code for purchasing is the same as last year and will be on the first order form that is sent home.  You are not restricted to our grade level, but have access to all the books Scholastic sells.

images back to schoolBack To School Night:  Please save August 20th for our Curriculum Night at school.  It will begin at 7:00 PM.  This is not a night for the kids…..they would be bored to death!!!  I look forward to seeing you.

Milk and Juice CardsMilk and Juice will be offered for K-6 students. Milk and juice are 40¢ each. You may purchase a milk and juice card for $8.00 each. Each card is good for 20 drinks.
