Mrs. R’s Super Stars January 21st, 2014

Good Morning! I hope you all had a wonderful 3 day weekend with your family!

This Week In Mrs. R’s Super Stars:

Bible: This week we will learn about Samson

Memory Verse:

Help me to do your will, for you are my God. Lead me in good paths.

Psalm 143:10 (19pts.)

* We have begun writing our Bible verses. The kids will not miss points for words not spelled correctly. In 2nd grade they are required to write their Bible verse rather than recite them by memory. I want to make sure they are prepared for this.

Language Arts: In our reading groups this week we are focusing on reading comprehension and fluency. By using our phonics phones I am having the kids listen to their own voices while they read and focus on reading like we talk. We check for comprehension by asking questions related to the story as well as completing working sheets that go along with each book. We are also looking at the setting as well as who the main characters are. In some of our groups we have been working on comparisons in stories and looking for words such as ‘like’ and ‘as’. For writing we have started on keyword outlines. I am teaching the students how to read a short story or paragraph and pull the most important words from the story and make an outline. Soon we will take our outline and rewrite the story using our own notes.

Math: we are starting a new unit on numbers and patterns to 100. I have completed a preassessment with the class to see what they already know. I am now able to start the unit and get going!!

SocialStudies: We will continue our unit on “All the people.”

Mrs. R’s Super Stars January 13th, 2014

Well, we had a successful first week back to school after our wonderful Christmas vacation. The kids are jumping right back into everything very easily. Please remember we will be working on our poems during the week for the Peach Blossom Festival. Make sure to send a copy to school for me. Please be sure to work on these each night with your child. The students must have these poems memorized.

This week in Mrs. R’s Super Stars:

Bible: We will continue learning about Gideon

Memory Verse: I will sing to the Lord because He has blessed me so richly.

Psalm 13:6 (16pts.)

Chapel: On Tuesday our class will be leading worship in chapel! Parents are welcome to come see!! The kids will sing about 4 or 5 songs to open up or time, I have then brought in a guest speaker who will be speaking on seeing opportunities around us!

Language Arts: This week we will be working on the long ‘e’ sound. Our spelling words will all focus on the long ‘e’, as well as doing other activities throughout the week to enforce the long ‘e’ sound. For reading we are continuing to work on fluency, comprehension, setting, and main characters. Some are also starting to look at comparisons in our short stories that we read in our reading. We are looking at words that compare such as “like” and “as”.  For writing we are continuing to focus on the writing steps and rules. We are learning how to brainstorm together to give supporting details of main ideas.

Math: This week we will finish up our unit on time and calendar. This is a very hard concept for kids to grasp. Being able to tell time is not something they are going to master just yet. We will take our test on Wednesday. Last week I sent home a chapter review for your child to work on. This does not have to be turned in. Although we will be moving on to Numbers and Patterns to 100, we will still continue to do activities that involve telling time.

Social Science: We will be focusing on All the People.

Health and Nutrition: Last week we had a great time introducing kids to various types of foods that we eat. We talked about which foods give you strong muscles (like protein), which foods give you BIG energy (like fruits and vegetables), and foods that give very little energy (like soda and candy). The kids also had a chance to learn the food pyramid and the different groups of foods that are required for a healthy diet.

Peach Blossom Festival: REMEMBER TO PRACTICE YOUR CHILDS POEM EVERY NIGHT!

Once again Fresno Christian School will be participating in the Peach Blossom Festival to be held at California State University of Fresno.

The selection procedure is as follows:

  1. All first and second grade children will memorize a poem. I must have a copy of their poem here with me at school.
  2. Students will be given opportunities to work on their poems in class, but must also work on them at home if they wish to have them memorized.
  3. Classroom evaluations will take place at the end of January. Three or four children from each class will be chosen to participate in the Oral Interpretation Assembly. No parents will attend on this day.
  4. Campus Oral Interpretation Assembly will be at school (location TBA). At this time two children will be chosen to participate in Peach Blossom at Fresno State. Parents are welcome to attend.

Chocolate sales: Our candy bar sales have begun. There are lots of prizes and activities for the class to win. Our goal is to sell the most boxes in first grade!!!!!!! Boxes will be available for pick up after school. Please make sure that when the kids are selling the candy they do not go door to door on their own. A wonderful/easy way to sell lots of candy is for mom or dad to take the box of candy to work. Lets SELL! SELL! SELL!

Observation: As part of my training and development as a teacher I have the opportunity to go into another first grade classroom all day on Monday January 13th. I will be using this time to observe an experienced teacher! I love when I get the opportunity to see how other teachers run their classrooms and get new ideas for curriculum! Because of this training, I will not be in class on Monday.

*Important Information*:  The grading on our spelling tests will change. During the first semester no points were taken off if a student reverses letters such a “b, d” or “p, q”. However, now that we are getting into the 2nd half of our year that will change. If a student reverses a letter on their spelling test they will not get credit for that word, even if it is spelled correctly. This is to help the students remember which ways our letters go. We will also work on this in writing. In writing we will continue working on proper writing rules. We will also work on expanding our sentences and forming clear coherent sentences independently.

Math: This week we will be looking at telling time!

Social Science: We will be reading “All about people.”

health and nutrition: This week the students will also be learning about health and nutrition. We will be looking at the 4 food groups, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. If you or any family members are in the health profession and would be willing to come speak to our kids about your career and the importance of nutrition please let me know! The kids love having their family come in!

Peach Blossom Festival

Once again Fresno Christian School will be participating in the Peach Blossom Festival to be held at California State University of Fresno. Please refer to the handout sent home before vacation for information.

The selection procedure is as follows:

  1. All first and second grade children will memorize a poem. Please bring me a copy of the poem your child has selected.
  2. Students will be given opportunities to work on their poems in class, but must also work on them at home if they wish to have them memorized.
  3. Classroom evaluations will take place in January. Three or four children from each class will be chosen to participate in the Oral Interpretation Assembly. No parents will attend on this day.
  4. Campus Oral Interpretation Assembly will be in January. At this time two children will be chosen to participate in Peach Blossom at Fresno State. Parents are welcome to attend.

The poem will be a minimum of 2 stanzas or 8 lines long. I can’t wait to hear them in January!

Hello Parents,

I hope you all had a great 3 day weekend, spending time with your families! Thanksgiving is right around the corner! I can’t believe how fast these holidays are coming.

This week in Mrs. Super Stars:

Bible: We will continue focusing on Thankfulness for the Thanksgiving season. We will discuss as a class all the things we have to be thankful for, and learn that everything we have is because of the graciousness of our Lord.

Memory verse

I will extol the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.

Psalm 34:1 (20pts.)

Language Arts: This week the students will be learning about plural words with -s and -es. Students will practice writing singular and plural words in their spelling book. In our guided reading groups we are continuing to cover the setting of a story and main characters. Students are also working on retelling the story in their own words. They are practicing telling me what happens first, next, and last in a story. We will continue going over all of these during our guided reading groups. In our writing we are focusing on writing about a place. The students are practicing making complete sentences. They are focusing on editing their own paper. This means making sure all their sentences start with a capital letter, all the rest are lower case, they are finger spacing between each word, and they end all their sentences with a period.

Spelling Words: (To be tested Friday)

3. box      4. boxes

5. dog    6. dogs

7. tent    8. tents

9. about    10. how

Math:  we are moving on to chapter 6 in our math books. Chapter 6 focuses on adding and subtracting facts to 12. We are skipping chapter 5 for now, and will come back to it at a later time. This chapter should be a review for the students, but they will be learning some new concepts such as adding 3 numbers together, finding the missing addend, subtracting from 12 and less, and fact families.

Social Science: We will be learning about pilgrims and Indians to prepare for our thanksgiving program.

This can be magazine cut outs, pictures, or drawings from your child. You can find poster boards at stores such as Walmart, Target, Longs, Dollar Tree, and Rite-Aid. The children will be making their traditions poster at home and sharing it at school.  It will be due during the week of Dec. 2-6.  Your child can bring it on any of those days and we will share in the afternoons.  Be looking for a note in their take home folders in regards to this assignment.

Operation Christmas Child – Thank you to all of you who participated in operation Christmas child. There are many families who are less fortunate than we are, and the Lord gives us many opportunities to bless these families with necessities that they need.

Together we CAN!

Once again we have the privilege to help the families of Pinedale this Holiday season!  We will be collecting CANned food Nov. 12th thru Dec. 6th to distribute through the Pinedale Book Buddies program.  Our High School students are already volunteering as Book Buddies and we would like to continue our support for their programs. Our delivery this year will help families by providing food for Christmas.  Pinedale resource leaders put together a list of items most used in the community (see back of flyer sent home).  Please make sure to check this list before you shop. There will be a prize awarded to the classes that bring the most items (1 prize for grades K-3, and 1 prize for grades 4-6).

If you are interested in making a financial donation, please send cash/check to the office and designate “Food – Pinedale.”  We have a program with Food Maxx where we use scrip & S.H.A.R.E.S. so FCS also benefits!

Mrs. R’s Super Stars November 4th 2013

Happy November! I still can’t believe how fast this year is flying by! This is a wonderful time of the year in which we can remember and be thankful for  all the Lord has blessed us with. We know that every good gift is from God. It also reminds me that we need to be thankful at ALL times for the things that we have. This month the theme for our class is thankfulness. As a class we will be discussing through the month what we are thankful for, and to know that these things come from God.

We had a great time this month learning about harvesting and pumpkins! On Friday we did pumpkin tasting! The kids were able to taste pumpkin cake, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin seeds, and pumpkin bars!! We also made a class graph to see which one everyone liked the best!

Language Arts: This week students will be going over a review of all the spelling rules we have learned this far. This is a great time to review with them. We will be reviewing double consonants and various word endings. We are continuing to learn the beginning, middle, and end of a story as well as main characters and settings. When reading at home with them this is a great reinforcement for you to do with them as well. We are also continuing to practice our sight words each day in our reading groups.

Writing: We will be working on writing an expository text about a real place.

Math: This week we will be working on chapter 4 with data and graphing.

Thanksgiving Unit  – We are learning about immigrants in Social Science and the contributions they have made to America.  Among the immigrants we study are the Pilgrims who sailed from England.  We will culminate our studies with a Thanksgiving Program with the Kindergartners. First Graders are the Pilgrims and the Kindergartners are the Indians. The boys should wear white shirts and dark pants and the girls should wear a dark dress or a skirt with a white blouse or shirt. The program will be on Tuesday, November 26th at 10:45 A.M. Location is TBA. There is school in the afternoon, however, your child is free to go after the program to begin their Thanksgiving vacation.  For those who stay, we will be watching a movie. If you know your child will not be here for the program, please let me know, as that will be helpful in preparing the groups for our program.  Thanks!

Bible –  We will not be studying a Bible character these next two weeks, but we will be focusing on our theme of Thankfulness and what God’s Word says about being thankful.

Operation Christmas Child -We are collecting  Samaritan’s Purse shoe boxes. Shoe boxes are due by Thursday, November 7th. If you need a box, there are still some available in the office. Thank you for participating in this worthwhile program as we share the love of Christ to those less fortunate.
