Mrs. R’s Super Stars

Dear Families,

I trust everyone had a restful weekend enjoying this cooler weather. We enjoyed our time at the fall festival! Its such a great time when the whole school can get together and fellowship! Thank you PTF for putting everything together! I know Ayla enjoyed all the fun activities out there!!

I want to give a big thank you to Mrs. Siebert, Mr. Witt, Mr. Reeves, Mr. Gamber, and my dad for giving our kiddos new individual desks!! They absolutely love them! The possibilities are endless with what I can do with our classroom arrangement!!

THIS WEEK IN MRS. R’S SUPER STARS:

Bible: This week we will be looking at The 10 Commandments

Memory Verse:

“Be with wise men and become wise. Be with evil men and become evil.” Proverbs 13:20 (17 pts)

Math: This week we will be finishing up chapter 3. We will take our chapter 3 test next week! Please look for a chapter review coming home.

Language Arts: This week our class will be learning about words ending with ng. and nk. Vowels before ng and nk are affected by the nasal sounds of the consonants they precede. It may be difficult for students to discern which vowels are used to spell each of the words in our list. Visual memory will be very important in this lesson. We are continuing on in our reading groups and the kids are doing great. We are focusing more on fluency and comprehension of the stories we read. Something that you can do at home would be to time your child multiple times while reading a book and see if they can beat their time. This will help with their fluency. Also ask them questions about the book to help with comprehension. Our spelling words for this week are below:

Science: Since it is harvest season, and we are going to the pumpkin patch, we have been learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin. The kids will be assessed this week on the life cycle of a pumpkin.

Social Science: Our changing world

P.E: Our class participates in P.E. every Wednesday afternoon with Mrs. Whipple.

Pumpkin Patch: Our class will be going to the pumpkin patch this Thursday from 10:30am to about 2:00pm. Younger siblings are welcome to join. If you have signed up to go with our class it would be a good idea to bring a blanket for lunch time. There is limited seating. 1st and 2nd will be going together, so parents will have to take their own cars.

Homecoming Week: This week is homecoming week. In elementary we are celebrating with dress-up days all week.

*Monday: Super Hero Day. Students may dress up as their favorite super hero. Biblical super hero’s are recommended. Students CAN NOT wear capes, NO weapons. Their outfit MUST be gender specific (i.e: boys are dressed up at boy as boy/men super hero’s. Girls are dressed up as girl/women hero’s.)

*Tuesday: Sports day. Students may wear their favorite sports team shirt. They would wear professional or school sports teams. NO equipment is allowed (i.e. helmet, bats, mits, balls, pads, etc.)

Fall weather  has finally arrived!! Praise the Lord!!! Now lets pray that it stays! Last week we finished up our first quarter!! I can not believe how fast this year is going by. I am very pleased with the progress of the entire class from the beginning of the year until now!

FIRST TIME OBEDIENCE: We are still working as a class on first time obedience. We have a hard time talking when we are suppose to be working. We have a hard time not following rules and procedures that were taught at the beginning of school. Due to this I have not been able to spend as much time with my reading groups as I would like. Please speak with your child about the importance of first time obedience, and how it effects the learning environment in our classroom.

This week in Mrs. R’s Super Stars

Bible: We will be studying Exodus

Language Arts: We will continue to work on our leveled readers in our guided reading groups. Please continue to work on sight words at home. When these words are easily recognized and read it really helps with the kids confidence when reading. I can already see the improvement. We are continuing to work on reading strategies with each group. I want them to be as independent as they can with all their reading. We will also be working very hard on fluency. This means they will be reading books that are a little easy for them, however we will be practicing reading them quickly!

Math: This week the students will be focusing on counting backwards to subtract, using the number line to subtract, problem solving, and fact families.

Writing: After going over all the 1st quarter assessments, I was very pleased with the progress of the class. The ares in our writing in which we will be working on is remembering to use a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence and using correct sentence structure. We will practice expanding our sentences and adding more detail.

Social Studies: We will  learn about our changing world

Science: The season is harvest season!! The students will be learning all about pumpkins and the life cycle of a pumpkin!

Pumpkin Patch: We will be taking a field  trip to single palm pumpkin patch on Thurs. October 24th.We will travel by bus and leave at 10:30 AM and return by 2:00 PM .We will eat lunch afterwards. Please bring blankets to sit on, seating will be limited. It should be great fun!!!! The children have already paid. Chaperones are free. Parents will be cutting the pumpkins off the vine. If parents would like to take a pumpkin home it will be $5.00.

Report Cards: Students will receive a Standards Based Report Card on Monday, Oct 21st.. At this stage of development a letter grade of P which means progressing, is very acceptable, and does not mean your child is not doing well.  If they knew everything at a satisfactory or excellent level in this stage of the game, I would need to fins a new job!!!!!

Christmas Program: Fresno Christian music department presents “A Candlelight Christmas”

Featuring grades K-4, Elementary Choir, and Jr. High Choir.

Wednesday December 11th, 2013 @ 5:30pm in the Fresno Christian Gym

Operation Christmas Child  – Please consider taking the opportunity to show your child the true spirit of giving at Christmas. Pack a shoe box with your child to send to needy children throughout the world. The children have lists of the suggested items, many of which can be purchased at a Dollar Store  at reasonable prices. Please be sure to put in only brand new items and include small toys ( no weapons), school supplies, stuffed animals and hygiene  items.  Most important is to pray over the box and for the child who will receive it.  For more suggestions or to download a new form to go with the box, go to samaritanspurse.org.  Boxes are in the office, however, they suggested how wonderful a plastic box would be, which you can get at Dollar Store because they use it to get water at the river and for putting vegetables and fruits in from their garden.  Also, include $7 in an envelope for shipping and handling. The deadline is Nov. 2nd. Shoe boxes are available in the elementary office.

Operation Christmas Child brought smiles to the faces of 7.7 million poor, sick and suffering children in more than 100 countries last year through shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, candy and other small gifts.  But these boys and girls received something even more important than a Christmas present.  They also leaned about the greatest gift of all—God’s son, Jesus Christ. Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers millions of shoebox gifts to children in desperate circumstances around the world.  In addition to bringing happiness to boys and girls who other wise wouldn’t receive any presents, this exciting project of Samaritan’s Purse also opens doors for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Through children’s literature and evangelistic programs, many lives are changed for eternity. We would like to invite you to join us this year as we again reach out to boys and girls in the Name of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to collect 250 shoeboxes at Fresno Christian Elementary by November 7 for children who face a daily struggle against war, persecution, disease, natural disaster, poverty, illness, or neglect.  Pray that God will meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Dear Families,

I can hardly believe that October is here! Time has flown by so fast. Thank you all for coming to our parent teacher conferences, I trust you all learned some great information about your child’s academic growth. I look forward to seeing the progress through this next quarter.

PARENT HELPERS: Be sure to check which day you have signed up to help in the month of October! Also, the Lord has blessed me with wonderful parent helpers this year! In order to allow everyone some time to volunteer in our class please do not sign up for anymore than 4 days in 1 month. If I am in need of extra help I will send out an email requesting parent helpers on certain days. Thank you for understanding!!

This week in Mrs. R’s Super Stars:

Language Arts: We have just finished up all the short vowel sounds in our spelling. We will move on to learning new word endings with double consonants. The children are continuing to grow everyday and move quickly through their reading levels! I am so impressed by their growth since the beginning of school! In regards to the books being sent home, please know that these texts should be pretty simple for them to read. Its about repetition. The more they read, and recognize words, the more confident they will become. This repetition will also help improve their fluency. When you need new books please send the books back to school in their take home folder (inside the plastic bag) and I will replace them with new ones.

Math: We will continue in our unit on Subtraction. The students are moving quickly, and picking things up easily! Our math curriculum moves very quickly and I am pleased with their progress! This class loves math!

Dear Families,

Fall is finally here, and the weather is starting to cool off! yeah!!! Our trip to Lost Lake was a success with all the parents who were able to come and help!

A QUICK REMINDER! PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES ARE THIS WEEK. WE ARE ON HALF DAY SCHEDULE ALL WEEK!

*** In honor of International Dot Day, and celebrating creativity and encouragement at FCS, Student Council has elected to make Friday, Sept., 27, spirit day clothing as “DOTS”! In lieu of the FCS spirit shirt, please wear clothing with dots:  shirts, shorts, socks, shoes, bows.

Character Builder: This week we are still focusing on first time obedience. I am wanting the children to learn that this not only applies at school but at home as well. This is still hard for some, but I trust with practice and patience the Lord will teach each child.

Language Arts:  We  be reviewing many of our short vowel sounds that we have been practicing in our spelling book. The students are doing amazing with me during our guided reading groups. Although I have chosen some text that may be difficult for them to read, it is the perfect chance for me to see if they are using reading strategies. I was able to attend a handwriting seminar last week and I learned a lot of wonderful information! I hope to try and incorporate this into our classroom soon!

Math: We are still working hard with our subtraction concepts

Science: This week we will be finishing up Unit 1 of living things.

Bible: This week we will be learning about Jacob

Take Home Folders: Please remember to look in your child’s folder everyday. Empty out any work that stays at home. Some folders are starting to fill up with old work, and it makes it hard to keep notes and new work in there.

Hello! I trust you all had a restful weekend. For those of you at the football game Friday night, we thank you for your prayers! The Lord is good and had His hand upon us. Val is doing good 🙂 Very sore from the blast but doing well.

Can you believe September is almost over? Time is flying by fast!

Reminder:

Please remind your child to bring their take home folder to school everyday. This is my way to communicate with you. Many times when their papers are loose in their backpacks they don’t always make it home. Also, remember to empty the “stays at home” side everyday. This is work the students are doing in class, and a way for you to see what we are working on. I also include school notes and reminders on this side.

Field Trips – Our first field trip will be to Lost Lake on Tuesday, Sept. 17th. Please check your email for a sign up sheet. We will be leaving Peoples campus around 8:45 and returning around 1:30. The students are very excited! They will be doing various stations, all which corollate with our science standards. Remember to wear your spirit shirt on this day!

This week in Mrs. R’s Superstars-

Bible:

Our focus this week will be on Isaac

This week we will also be working on character building. We will focus on first time obedience. In the beginning of school we over classroom and school rules to follow. Last week we worked on our “silence endurance” and went over the expectations I have for them. This can be a challenge but we are working hard towards our goal. Thank you parents for your patience last week in letting me work with them during stations.

Math:

Last week we took our first math test on addition concepts. We have now moved into subtraction concepts.

Reading/Language Arts:

This week I will be sending some books for the kids to read. Please use these at home and return whenever you are done reading them. This is a great opportunity to hear your child read and see where they are at. This is also great practice for them to get extra reading at home. In our guided reading groups the children are doing really well. We will continue working on different reading strategies the students can use such as sounding it out, looking at the pictures, and looking for word chunks. We will continue working on sight words recognition as well. Mrs. Howard will soon be working on Word Builders.

Social Studies:

We will continue in our unit 1 study of working together, following rules and laws, and learning about the community around us.

Science:

Last week we learned about living and non living things. This week we are going to continue learning about living and non-living things but with an emphasis on Apples.

Conferences –   Thank you for confirming your conference appointment time by sending back the notice in the work envelope.. If the scheduled time does not work out for you, please call Mrs. Roberts to reschedule. Conference week is September 23- 27.  School is dismissed at 12:00 P.M. each day that week. I look forward to sharing with you.

Grandparent’s Day – Thank you to everyone who was able to help make grandparents day so successful!!! I believe everyone enjoyed their time together and the grandparents were sent home with lots of cute crafts! We had a wonderful turnout and I am so thankful for our time to honor our grandparents!!

Spelling: some of you may have some questions in regards to how I score our spelling tests. The students are scored on more than just their spelling words. They are also scored on dictation and convection. They do not miss points if they reverse letters in their spelling words at this point, however further in the year that will change. Dictation: did they hear and write all the words in the given sentence? They receive one point for each correct word written correctly in the sentence. If the misspelled a spelling word in the sentence they miss a point. Convection: Did they start with a capital letter and end their sentence with a period? They receive one point for each capital and period.

Box Tops for Education

This year we will again be participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive we will be having a class contest. The class bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize”. We will post class totals monthly in the Office window and on our Campus News located on our website: fresnochristian.com.

Please hand in your trimmed Box Tops in a Ziploc bag or envelope, labeled with your child’s/teacher’s name and the amount of Box Tops to your teacher or school office.

You can find a list of Box Tops online at: www.boxtops4education.com.

Thank you for your support.

ELEMENTARY CHEER CLINIC!!

As many of you know I am the high school cheer coach and advisor. Hope Villines is our Jr High and Elementary cheer coach and advisor. We are very excited this year for the elementary cheer clinic! The clinic will be held October 7th-10th on the North Field grass. They will then perform Friday October 11th at the home football game. The girls will get to cheer the first half of the game with the high school and jr high cheerleaders. Then they will finish up with a big half time show!!! The registration is $40 ($10 additional child in the same family). This will include a T-shirt and adorable performance! This year we are also very excited because we are opening up our cheer clinic to students outside Fresno Christian. Please help us spread the word! If you have any family members or neighbors grades K-6 who would be interested in attending our clinic please let me know and I will provide the liability form that needs to be filled out for them! This is a great way to spread the word about Fresno Christian and introduce new families to what our school is about!!!!!

Bible

This week we will finish up learning about Abraham and move into learning about Isaac. Our memory verse this week:

Physical Science

We will focus on living and non living things. The class loved their adventure around our campus looking for living and non living things.

Language Arts

We will continue to work on reading and phonics. Students will read with me everyday as well as work on new phonics concepts and review ones we have already learned. We will start reviewing sight words everyday. This will help to build fluency in their reading. I encourage you whenever you are out to have your child read everything. Have them try and read the menu when you go out to dinner, read billboards as you are driving, etc. The more reading, the better! Be on the look out for books coming home this week.

During our library time we will not be checking out books just yet. You are more than welcome to take your child to the library and check out books with them!

We will begin working towards our writing benchmark in October. In first grade they will be tested on writing an expository text about a person. We will focus on Starting with an uppercase and ending with a period. The students will also work on using descriptive writing.

Grandparent’s Day – Friday, October 13th is Grandparent’s Day. This is always a very fun time for the children.  If you do not have grandarents that can attend, please feel free to invite a senior friend.  We will also share grandparents for those who have none when we do our special activities.  No one will be left out. This year things will be a little different. Grandparents will visit our classroom from 9:50-11:40 am where we will engage in some fun activities! Grandparents will then join their child for lunch from 11:40-12:25. At 12:25 pm grandparents will say goodbye to their grandchild.

Take Home Folders

Please remember to ask for you child’s take home folder everyday. This is how I communicate with you and send home any important information. Also please be sure to empty the “Take Home” side each night. This is work they are doing in class and you are able to see what we are learning. If the students do not finish their work in class I will put it in their take home folders. They must complete it and return it. If the forget their folders, they tend to say “my mom/dad forgot it”. I am trying to get them away from this and learn personal responsibility. I remind them that mom and dad are very busy and it is not their responsibility to remember your folder every night.

First Time Obedience

Our class is really working on first time obedience. We have had some struggles with talking during class and listening to authority during lunch and recess. We discussed how important it is to listen the first time. We talked about why we have rules and why they are important. We also talked about how our class will not function properly if everyone is not obeying the rules. Please follow up at home with the importance of first time obedience.

 Hello Families!

Wow! Can you believe September is already here? I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend spending time with family and friends. This week in 1st grade we will be starting some new things in our room!

Bible

This week we will be learning about Jacob, Esau, and Joseph. Our memory verse this week can be found in Psalm 136:1

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.  (13 pts)

Please be sure to review this every night with your child, although we have a short week they will still be tested on Friday.

Math

This week in math we will be doing a lot of review with addition, but we will also be working on word problems. This can be a challenging area of math, but I believe we will accomplish it!

Social Studies

This week we will also begin our first Social Studies unit on rules and laws. Students will learn about our community and why its important that we have rules and laws.

Science

In science we will begin learning about living and non-living things

Language Arts

This week we will focus on the short vowel ‘e’ sound as in ‘pet’.

We will also be practicing our writing, focusing on starting with an uppercase and ending with a period.

We will continue to work hard on phonics and sight word recognition. This is so important for reading. Once the students begin to recognize more sight words and learn new letter sounds, their reading will become much easier for them and more fluent.

Last week we also started library time. We will be going to the library every Friday at 2:10. During this time the students will have a chance to become familiar with our library, how we act in a library, and read!! read!! read!!

As I get more comfortable with their reading groups I will start sending home some books to read each week along with their homework.

FIELD TRIP

Our first field trip will be to Lost Lake on Friday, Sept. 17th.  We will be doing various stations of activities all of which correlate with our Science Standards.  We will travel by bus and leave People’s campus at 8:45 AM and return by 1:30 PM.  We will be needing parent volunteers for each station.  The children love this field trip!!  There is no charge for adults and the children have already paid.  Everybody will bring a sack lunch and a drink.

Take Home Folders

Please remember to ask for you child’s take home folder everyday. This is how I communicate with you and send home any important information. Also please be sure to empty the “Take Home” side each night. This is work they are doing in class and you are able to see what we are learning. Good Morning Parents!

I trust everyone had a wonderful restful weekend with friends and family!! We had a great week diving into learning!

Thank you to all the parents who attended back to school night last week. I trust you received all the information you needed about what our little ones are doing in class. It was great to meet some of the other parents and family members who I had not met yet.

Spelling Tests

This week I will be sending home their spelling tests. They will get a point for each word they spelling correctly. At this point I will not mark them wrong for reversing letters, however as we get more comfortable with our writing, if they reverse the letter in a word they will get it wrong. For the sentences; Convection is starting with an upper case letter and ending with a period. Since there are 3 sentences they can get a total of 6 points for this. Dictation is if they wrote all the words from the sentence. They will get 1 point got each word they wrote correctly. If they misspell the spelling word in the sentence they will not get credit for it.

Vocabulary & Reading

Last week I began working with students in their guided reading groups. In this weeks homework I have included sight words for the students to practice. Most of these words are decodable (you can sound them out), the goal is to recognize them and know them quickly. These are great to put on index cards and make flash cards for your child to have. The goal of timing your child to read the sight words is to encourage fast recognition of the word without having to sound them out. My goal is to continue to adding words each week to the list. This will not only help build vocabulary of the class, but is a great aide in helping the children read fluently. As we get going I will be sending books home with students so they can have more time for reading at home. Also, When our new beautiful library reopens for use, our kiddos will be able to go to the library once a week to get some books!

Take Home Folders

It is important that these folders go home and return to school everyday. Please remind students to bring their folders to school everyday. This is where I send home work that we are doing in class for you to see along with any important notes that I may need you to see. Also, if you need to send me notes such as transportation changes, Dr appointments, or emergencies please place it in your child’s take home folder. I check them every morning. I do tell the kiddies that it is their responsibility as a 1st grader to remember their folders everyday, not their parents. However, since it is early in the school year please guide them in bringing it to school daily as they get use to our routine. Also, please empty the notes sleeve as well as the stays at home side. I notice some of their folders getting full.

Homework

Homework will continue to come home every Monday. Please do not send pages back individually through the week. Keep the entire homework packet at home until Friday. I will collect everything on Friday from their take home folders. Again, its important the students complete their homework. This is reinforcement of what they are learning in class. Again, as we get into our reading and I get comfortable with their reading levels I will be sending books home for the students to read at home. As that time comes I will give more instruction.

Math

We spent all last week reviewing our addition concepts with the students! They are doing a great job with what’s being taught in class. Students will be bringing home work pages that we complete in class for you to see what they are reviewing and learning. If students finish their seat work early in the mornings they are also given extra math sheets to do in class.

Spelling

This week we will begin working on lesson 7 in their spelling books. The spelling words for August were sent home the first week of school. If you misplace them they will be posted online in our news letter as well as included in their homework packet. Spelling tests will be given each Friday. Students will have to know how to spell their words as well as writing dictation sentences with each test. The students do not know what the sentences will be before the test, so they do not have to study them at home.

Bible

Students will still be required to recite their Bible memory verse to me every Friday. We will cover the verse everyday in class, and reciting it at home everyday will be great for them. Last week we finished our unit on creation. This week we will move into learning about Noah, Abraham, and Isaac. How exciting!!! I still get so exciting about the freedom I have to read God’s word in school!! What a blessing!

Writing

Last week the students were able to start writing in their journals. Boy was I impressed!!! We will be working on writing a description about a real person as well as writing using our daily journal prompts. Students will be assessed on this during our first benchmark in October.

Parent Helpers

Last week I put up a sign up sheet for the month of September at back to school night and it was filled up! We use parent helpers Monday-Thursday from 9-10:15am. We do not use helpers on Fridays since we do not do stations. If there is a day that is already full for parent help, and you would still like to come in, please do so!

Show and Tell

We will start having our show and tell groups every Monday and Friday. Please remind the children to only bring out their show and tell during our show and tell time. They are not allowed to have them during class or out at recess.

Teddy

The kids are loving having Teddy in our class! I get so excited to read all their adventures and begin to watch the progress in their writing. In the beginning if your child needs assistance on their writing that is fine. However, they do need to write it. You can help them dictate. Please remind them to write complete sentences with finger spaces in between each word. Teddy will not go home on Fridays. He will stay with me and get a bath 🙂

Fundraiser

We are in the middle of our fundraise that began Last week and will finish in September. There are some great items for sale, and cool prizes for the little ones. Our goal is that each student sell $60 worth of items. All profits will go to FCS to benefit our children. Sell! Sell! Sell!

Reminder

One of my responsibilities at FCS is being the cheer advisor for high school. I do have practice to run after school on Mondays and Wednesdays, with games on Fridays. So I will only be available for a short time after school on these days.

Have a fruitful week!!

Wow! What a great first week we had! I hope you had a wonderful, restful weekend! I thank the Lord for our time together and pray for a wonderful year! I am looking forward to seeing these little cuties grow in Christ, and grow in academic knowledge! Because God is gracious we were able to finish all our assessments in week 1! Phew! Now its time to dive into learning.

Spelling

This week students will begin working on their spelling words for the week, and will be tested on Friday. Be sure to work on these at home with the homework.

Bible

This weeks memory verse can be found in Genesis 1:31a

“God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.”

We will be going over this everyday in class. First graders will recite the verse to me every Friday to receive their points.

Homework

Homework will be coming home this week. Please check the front of the August letter, this will give you updates along with a pacing guide on which to complete the homework. Homework will go home each Monday, and must be returned each Friday.

Reading

We will begin working in our reading groups this week. I will be sending home some sight words for the students to be working on along side our reading time in class. Its essential for them to work on these words at home and at school. The more easily recognizable they are, the more fluent their reading will become.

Take Home Folders

Please be sure to check your students yellow take home folders everyday. Anything that is on the “Stays at Home”  and “Notes” side needs to be emptied and kept at home. Please be sure this folder comes to school everyday.

Teddy

This week we will begin sending Teddy home. Encourage your child to take Teddy where ever they go after school. If you desire you may take pictures and include it in Teddy’s journal. At the end of the day help your child write about the adventures they had will Teddy in his journal. We will be reading this in front of the class each day at calendar time.

Show and Tell

This week I will be sending out a list of who has show and tell on what day. We will do show and tell every Monday and Friday.

Thank you so much for a great week! If you have any questions please email me at craymundo@fresnochristian.com
