EASTER CELEBRATION

Please note that due to a FCS Track and Field sporting event on Friday, April 11 involving several  3rd grade students, our class Easter Celebration has been changed to Thursday, April 10 from 1:20-2:30 PM.  Celebration activities will take place on the athletic field.

Thank you for all the wonderful help in planning and preparing for this special experience for our third graders.  We appreciate your thoughtful kindness to our class and an opportunity to fellowship together as we enter the Easter season and celebrate Christ’s Resurrection and our Hope of Glory with Him!!!!

KOPI ON CAMPUS THIS THURSDAY!

This Thursday, April 10, 2014  elementary students have an opportunity to promote FCS for free!  Kopi Sotiropulos from KMPH News Channel 26 will be coming to FCS to film the TEN DAY WEATHER FORECAST AND GREAT DAY FACES!!!  Students are encouraged to wear FCS spirit wear!

Grades 1-6 will meet Kopi on the athletic field bleachers at 11:00 AM. Kopi will do the TEN DAY WEATHER FORECAST first.  Students will sit by class.  It is recommended that classes arrive early at 10:50 AM.   After the forecast, Kopi would like each class to gather on the grass in their own group and he will film the GREAT DAY FACES in class order.  This event will last 30 minutes from start to finish and students will be released back to class at 11:30 AM.

At 11:30 AM Kopi will then do a 30 minute weather presentation for the 2nd & 3rd graders in Mrs. Fraser’s classroom.

LOST AND FOUND

Before you go home for Easter vacation, be sure and check the Lost and Found up in the hallway of Building 5.  We have a LOT of unclaimed clothes, umbrellas, lunch boxes, backpacks, etc.  Any items left on Friday, April 11th will be donated to charity.

MATH

There will be a math test on Wednesday, April 9 over Chapter 7 Geometry and Measurement.  A pre-test will be sent home as homework to review concepts covered.

We will begin Chapter 8 and learn more about division of whole numbers.  You can expect to see work that provides practice with dividing 2-digit numbers by 2, 5, 3, and 4 and with finding unit cost.

Math Vocabulary Words:

Dividend – The number that is divided in a division problem

Divisor – The number by which a number is divided in a division problem

Unit Cost – The price of one item

During this chapter, students should continue to memorize basic multiplication and division facts.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I am writing to remind you that Fresno Christian families are NOT allowed to use the Kid’s Inc drop-off area.  FCS families are NOT to enter the campus from Fir Ave.  FCS families must enter from Alluvial or Cedar Ave., by the FCS tennis courts.  The busses for Kid’s Inc. must be able to come and go without interference from FCS families.  We share this campus with Kid’s Inc., Peoples Church Pre-School, as well as a variety of other Peoples Church programs.  It is critical that we ALL use the facility as directed.  Please see the attached map and make sure that you follow the correct procedures.

Sincerely,

Todd Bennett, Principal

YOUNG AUTHOR STORIES

Writing with your children has been such a  joy this year!  They are becoming wonderful wordsmiths of descriptive, detailed sensory language in their story writing.  I am proud that they are writing competently, viewing reflectively, and visually expressing their ideas as well.

Third grade students wrote creative fictional narratives for their Young Author Story Contest this year.  They all expressed such imagination and did a wonderful job!  Three students’ stories were selected and judged by a panel of A.P. English High School students.  Congratulations to the students with special recognition:

1st Place – Summer Foshee

2nd Place – Macie Gleason

3rd Place – Olivia Dansby

The first, second, and third places winners will receive a published copy of their story.  Our school library and class library will also receive a published copy.  The first place winner will have  copies of their story available for purchase at an “Autograph Signing” Table during Open House Night.  You will also see all of our third grade stories on students’ desks at Open House Night.  Congratulations to everyone for an excellent effort!

LANGUAGE ARTS

The fourth quarter of third grade we will focus on learning to write friendly, personal letters.  Along with a continuing study grammar skills in nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and adverbs, students will study about including all 5 parts of a letter:  heading, greeting,  body , closing, and signature.  As they learn to write personal letters, they will be graded on maintaining their focus, organizing ideas, writing complete sentences, using correct grammar, indentation, capitalization, and punctuation.

PARENT CORNER

SAT 10 TESTING
The SAT achievement test is scheduled for next week March 31-April 4.  Testing will take  place in the morning.  It is important that your child BE PROMPT to school.   PLEASE AVOID BEING ABSENT if possible during testing week.  If you have appointments that could be rescheduled, that would be very helpful. The following are five suggestions to help your child prepare for testing:

1.  HAVE YOUR CHILD GO TO SLEEP EARLY.
It’s very important that he/she is well rested and alert when the test is given.  Try to have him/her in bed by at least 8:30 PM on the night before the test is administered.

2.  YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE AT SCHOOL ON TIME.
The test is administered first thing in the morning while the children are alert.  If your child comes to school late, there is a chance he/she will not be able to take the test with the rest of the students.  The test will have to be made up at a later date.

3.  A GOOD BREAKFAST IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Make sure that your child has a nutritious breakfast before he/she takes a test.

4.  DO WHAT YOU CAN TO HELP YOUR CHILD BE IN A GOOD MOOD.
If your child is in a good  mood, it will show up on the test!  It has been proven that the mood your child is in helps determine how well he/she does on a test.

5.  EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS TEST.
The teachers have already spoken to the children about the importance of doing well on this test.  Help him/her by doing the same.  If your child knows why he/she is being tested and why it is important to do well on this test, he/she will pay closer attention to the directions when the test is given.  Tell him/her that this test will help determine what he/she has learned this year.

PLEASE NOTE THAT OTHER THAN MONDAY, THERE WILL NO PARENT HELPERS DURING SAT TESTING WEEK.

FINE ARTS FESTIVAL AND CLASSROOM OPEN HOUSE

Come and join us for a fabulous evening of Fine Arts, Music, and Open House on Tuesday, May 6  6:30-9:00 P.M. We will begin in our classroom where students will give their parents a tour of our Fresno history themed classroom and share their work.  Then we will all head out to the Chapel of People’s Church for third grade square dancing and the Fine Arts Festival.

As part of “Fresno History Day” third graders will dress up as Fresno pioneers for the square dancing performance planned by Mrs. Ainley, our music teacher OPEN HOUSE EVENING.  Students may come dressed in any of the following ways:  Yokut Native American Indian, fur trapper, gold miner, Fresno pioneer, cowboy, or cowgirl.  Students may want to start planning their attire for the May 6th event.

YEAR END CLASS REWARDS

As a reminder at Back to School night I addressed our class Math & Reading Counts goals. They were as follows:

ICE CREAM PARTY- Student must earn 100 points for Reading Counts OR master their Third Grade Level 4×4 Math facts in addition and subtraction.

PIZZA PARTY- Students must earn 500 points for Reading Counts OR become a Lifetime Member in our 4 x 4 Math Club.

Students have until Friday, May 9th to complete these goals.

 SOCIAL STUDIES PROJECTS

All 3rd grade students will be completing a Fresno History Board  Project during class time to display at Open House.  Students will be assigned a partner this week to “share a board” with.  The information will be done separately and they will be graded on their work only.

Freestanding tri-fold boards (size 36” x 48”) have been ordered for the class to do their projects.  The cost of the board was included in tuition.  Once students have been assigned partners and know the color of their presentation board, they will need to plan to purchase a bright, colorful border to trim the border for the project. These can be purchased at GW School Supply House where there are many wonderful choices or at an office supply store.  I will let you know when the boards come in and when you need to bring your presentation board trim.

 MATH

This week we continue our study of geometry and measurement in  Chapter 7 covering lines of symmetry, perimeter, finding areas, estimating areas, problem solving by finding patterns.

Bring your desserts to the FCS gym on Saturday, March 15 , between 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  We will even wrap them for you!  Cookies, cakes, pies, brownies, candies, dipped items, tarts, cupcakes…every dessert will be sold!  Students will receive points for each dessert item donated.  Be sure to fill out a form for your student’s class to get credit.  Thank you for your support!!  Questions?

PARENT CORNER

PARENT CONFERENCES

Thank you for the time spent together during Parent/Teacher Conference Week.  It was very helpful to connect, listen to you share your thoughts and insights, learn more about your family, celebrate progress, and set new goals together.  I appreciate your support, prayers,  and encouragement in this journey of education together with your child.

  VALENTINE’S DAY

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!  The third graders are learning about the greatest command Jesus gave us: to love the Lord with all your heart, mind, and strength and to love your neighbor (your study buddy sitting beside you) as much as you love yourself.  Our devotions this week will focus around what it means to be a loyal friend and  love at  all times by knowing, liking, and accepting another person the way God made them.

MEMORY BOOK

This is a request  to all who have taken pictures of our class this year.  I would appreciate it if you could put them on a CD and send it to school. This would include all our field trips,  Christmas program, and parties.  We are in need of pictures for our Yearbook, which is prepared online. Many thanks!

SCIENCE

This week we have a science homework assignment to do as a family.  You will find it in your Red Folder along with your weekly math homework.  It is called “Lesson 5:  Breakfast Blast!”  There is a student activity along with a family activity.  Please return the assignment on Thursday along with your other work in your Red Homework Folder.

With preparation for Physical Fitness Testing we will focus on Lesson 7 this week entitled:  “Get Ready, Get Set, Get Moving!” along with Lesson 8 “Label Language” and food labels.

WRITING

In writing we are learning to write fictional narratives using sample prompts,  cluster charts to brainstorm characters and settings, story maps to plan the beginning, middle, and ending, color code our descriptive words, dialogue, similes, and peer conference in pairs to revise and improve our rough drafts.

READING

This week we will focus on the comprehension skill of story structure with elements of main characters, setting, plot, problem, what happens, and ending.  We will also study the comprehension skill of making judgements and decisions.

READING COUNTS
