The Transformational Power of Serving

Students in the Fresno Local Outreach Club share how serving has changed their lives

At Fresno Christian Schools (FCS), service isn’t just something students do. Actively serving their local community shapes the leaders students become.
The high schoolers in the student-led Fresno Local Outreach Club (FLOC) have served with organizations such as the Fresno Mission and Poverello House. Seeing familiar faces week after week and sharing real conversations shifted how students saw both others and themselves.

“[Through volunteering], I really got to learn and understand other people’s struggles. I became friends with a lot of the people we served,” said one member of the club.

Serving also helped members of the outreach club gain perspective on what matters in their lives.

“It’s really easy, especially as a high school student, to just focus on yourself… the next task… sports… But we’re not the center. God is the center,” says one member of FLOC.

This is the heart behind what we teach at FCS. Service is not about feeling good or being noticed. It is about honoring God and responding to what He has already done for us.

Matthew 20:28 reminds us of Jesus’ example: “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

As followers of Christ, His example challenges us to love boldly and serve faithfully.

“Our job here at Fresno Christian Schools is [to] train kids to impact the world… to be world changers,” says Jeremy Brown, Superintendent of Fresno Christian Schools.

“If you’re a follower of Christ, service should be a part of your life.”
