your-word

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome new and returning families to the 2012-2013 Fresno Christian School year! WE ARE ONE GROWING IN CHRIST! Our school memory verse this year comes from Ephesians 4:14-15. I thank the Lord for planting a school in our community where we can gather and grow in HIS word and love. Let’s join together on the first day of school at convocation on Monday, August 12th, 7:55 AM, in the Peoples Church sanctuary. Families are encouraged to come and celebrate the first 30 minutes of your child’s new school year!

images kids and crossIn our classroom, we will be a community of learners growing in the knowledge of Christ as we lift each other up in daily prayer. It is such a joy to have this opportunity to start our morning off with prayer and devotion.  Students will be given a composition book to record their study and journal  passages from the Bible. We will begin with a Psalms, Provers, and Job Diary.

This means electronic devices MAY NOT be out at school unless instructed to do so by their teacher. No overnight storage is available  so students will need to take to and from school on a daily basis. A technology use form will be reviewed with the students and sent home for your signature of approval.

PARENT SUPPORT BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL: It is my desire to assist students with developing responsibility of completing school work. Therefore,  on Monday’s, students will be given seat work.  Students will be provided 30 minutes of morning class time to complete their seat work. The weekly seat work assignments are an effort grade and focus on new skills and common core standards. In order to receive the full effort grade of 5 points per activity, students must complete during the week and turn in on Thursday, at 8:30 AM.  Those who fail to complete all weekly assignments are given a full grade reduction. The work will be placed in their communication folder for you to review and assist nightly as needed. Should an emergency arise or your child become ill,  grace will of course be given and a plan for completion will be put into action.

There is a fee that you will need to pay, however we do our best to make that fee as small as possible.  It is a wonderful time to watch your child grow not only mentally but spiritually as well.  We had several re-dedications, as well as first time commitments, last year. The spirit of the Lord is present and evident in the beauty that surrounds the camp.

Bible:   I’m excited to incorporate Excellence in Writing techniques in our Bible Composition Book! Students will study God’s word daily, and journal a response. The goal and objective is to help students to be able to retell God’s word as they learn it. Also, to have a keepsake of their Biblical studies. THIS WEEK’S MEMORY VERSE IS:

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.       Ephesians 4:15  (STUDENTS WILL BE TESTED ON FRIDAY)

Math: To begin, we will check in for understanding and review skills in math with reference to a strong number sense. The math will be teacher directed, guided and independent work. The independent assignments will be listed on a rubic so that students can set personal goals for achievement!

Math will also be taught with a common core approach; weekly number talks, incorporation of KHAN ACADEMEY math computer skills

Social Studies: ARCHAEOLOGY!

Language Arts:  I will kick off our reading with a teacher fictional read aloud that ties into our Social Studies!  The title of the book is The Case That Time Forgot, The Sherlock Files by Tracy Barrett.

Students need to bring a book to school each day to read when all work is completed.

Writing: Students will respond to literature, learn how to write a summary, and state the author’s message. GOALS:  summary, author’s purpose.

Spelling:  Students will study with an understanding of root,  prefixes, suffixes, homophones, homographs, high frequency words, and syllabication. The intermediate grade levels offer fantastic integration for grades 4-8 in these areas. The weekly spelling lessons will be designed to assist students with transfer of spelling knowledge to independent writing, reading comprehension, language arts, and speaking.

Yes! Spelling this week. I will introduce ten words due to the start of a new school year.

Week 1: root words of:  -able (able to be), students will be taught and tested on vocabulary too

GOALS AND STANDARDS: All goals are based on 5th and 6th grade standards. As we apply these standards to our studies, we will also apply scripture (Biblical truth) to our learning in ALL subject areas.

SPIRIT WEAR:  Students will be given a class t-shirt. You may also purchase additional Spirit Wear online at our FCS website. Simply click on the FCS Eagle Logo in the bottom right hand corner!
