We Are One: Growing in Christ

FCS Academic

Dear Parents,

Parent-teacher conferences are from September 23-27. Please contact Kerry Roberts in the office to reschedule if the time allotted to you is inconvenient.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION:

This year we will again be participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive, we will be having a class contest. The class bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize.” We will post class totals monthly in the Office window and on our Campus News located on our website: fresnochristian.com. Please hand in your trimmed Box Tops in a Ziploc bag or envelope, labeled with your child’s/teacher’s name and the amount of Box Tops, to your teacher or school office. You can find a list of Box Tops online at: www.boxtops4education.com. Thank you for your support.

GRANDPARENTS’ DAY:

Grandparents’ Day is this Friday, September 13th.  A shuttle service will be available  from parking lots “A” and “F”  to transport grandparents to the Peoples Courtyard. Student schedules may be picked up at the Courtyard from 9:30-9:50 and grandparents will visit classrooms from 9:50-11:40. Lunch will be provided for grandparents and students. For maps and further information, visit www.fresnochristian.com.

HUME LAKE FOR 6TH GRADERS:

This year we will be going to Hume Lake for 6th grade camp October 14-18 to study Outdoor Education. Parents, you should have received an email from Hume Camp last week. Please respond to it as soon as possible.

WRITING:

Students will write opinion and author’s purpose paragraphs about stories and books. This is in preparation for the 1st Quarter “Response to Literature” summative writing assessment.

READING:

Students will read a book from a different genre each month. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum  of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework. The genre for the month of September is mystery. Students should show their selected mystery book to me for approval. Students will write a complete “Response to Literature” for this book, due at the end of September.

The 5th grade will review and prepare for Thursday’s test on Chapter 1: Whole Numbers, Decimals and Integers. The 6th grade will study dividing decimals and whole numbers. Students will utilize the online Khan Academy program to practice and reinforce concepts.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

The Mesopotamia web quest activities are due on Monday, September 9. All information for the activities can be found on the website, www.ducksters.com, and in the Social Studies textbook. This week we complete our study of Ancient Mesopotamia with a study of cuneiform writing and the law code of Hammurabi.
