HOMECOMING WEEK OCTOBER 21-25

Homecoming Week is here!  The high school will have a variety of activities throughout the week, culminating in the football game, class float judging, and presentation of the king and queen on Friday night. We want to welcome all of our parents, alumni, and supporters of our school to attend Homecoming Night on Friday, October 25th.  Plan to come join us for an exciting night of football, fun, fanfare and fellowship. Kickoff is 7 pm. Dusty Buns Catering will be offering a variety of tasty food. Papa Schultz is hosting a drop-in reception for FC alumni in the newly remodeled FCS Library.

The Elementary grades will be dressing up right along with the Jr. High and High School students.  Here is a list of this week’s Spirit Wear Activities:

MONDAY: SUPER HERO DAY

Students may dress up as their favorite super hero. Biblical super heroes are recommended. Students CANNOT wear capes, NO weapons.  Their outfit MUST be gender specific (i.e: boys are dressed up at boy as boy/men super hero’s. Girls are dressed up as girl/women hero’s.)  No blood or icky stuff.  This is not a Halloween costume day.

TUESDAY:  SPORTS DAY

Students may wear their favorite sports team shirt. They could wear professional or school sports teams. NO equipment is allowed (i.e. helmet, bats, mits, balls, pads, etc.)

WEDNESDAY:  PAJAMA DAY

Dress code is enforced, NO slippers.

THURSDAY:   BAND-AIDE/BANDAGE DAY

No crutches, wheelchairs, cans, walkers, etc. No blood or dismembered looking costumes.  Students may bandage their arms and legs.  They must be able to be safe.

 FRIDAY:  FCS SPIRIT DAY!!!

Wear your favorite Spirit Wear!!!

DISCOVERY OF THE YOKUTS

Monday, October 21, Silas Emerian’s great aunt, Nancy Hoyt, will visit our classroom.  She visits many 3rd and 4th grade classrooms in Fresno and the surrounding areas to give a presentation about local Native American tribes.  She will be our guest from 12:30-2:30 PM to share original artifacts and photos about the Yokuts tribe (who lived from Stockton to Dinuba).

After the presentation the class will break into four groups:

One group will grind acorns (she has the original pestles)

One group will look at books of animal footprints, foods the Indians ate, etc.

One group will make copies of woven basket designs on fake leather;

One group will examine arrowheads

It will be a very hands-on afternoon and Mrs. Hoyt has an amazing way with children to bring these things alive.  We look forward to a great day of exploring and discovering!

 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Operation Christmas Child brought smiles to the faces of 7.7 million poor, sick and suffering children in more than 100 countries last year through shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, candy and other small gifts.  But these boys and girls received something even more important than a Christmas present.  They also leaned about the greatest gift of all—God’s son, Jesus Christ.

Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers millions of shoebox gifts to children in desperate circumstances around the world.  In addition to bringing happiness to boys and girls who other wise wouldn’t receive any presents, this exciting project of Samaritan’s Purse also opens doors for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Through children’s literature and evangelistic programs, many lives are changed for eternity.

We would like to invite you to join us this year as we again reach out to boys and girls in the Name of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to collect 250 shoeboxes at Fresno Christian Elementary by November 7 for children who face a daily struggle against war, persecution, disease, natural disaster, poverty, illness, or neglect.  Pray that God will meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.  SHOE BOXES ARE AVAILABLE FOR PICK-UP IN THE ELEMENTARY OFFICE.

WRITING

This quarter we will  begin focusing on writing a personal narrative about an event or an experience in their lives.  Students will be taught to write a beginning paragraph which will include the characters, topic,  and setting.  The  middle paragraph will include  the sequential order as well as what the writer was thinking and how the writer felt.  In the ending paragraph third graders will learn to write why this experience was important to the writer, why the writer will always remember this experience, or what the writer learned from this experience.  We will continue to review correct grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.  Students will also learn how to use the rubric to see the expectations and to grade their own writing.  Benchmark writing assessments will be in December.

READING COUNTS
Please note that Reading Counts activity is tracked every week so students need to read 1 Red Star book every week and take a quiz either at school on Wednesdays or Fridays during computer lab at home with adult supervision.  Please bring your book with you.   If no book is read and no quiz taken weekly, a 0% F will be entered as a weekly grade in Reading for Reading Counts.
BOX TOP DRAWING
Just a reminder that every Friday is Box Top Drawing Day.

TUESDAY LIBRARY DAYS

Just a reminder that every Tuesday afternoon is Library Day for our third grade class from 2:00-2:45 PM.  Please remember to return your library books to the library in a timely manner.  Students may keep their books for book report projects until the projects are due.  Students also should check out a minimum of 1-2 Red Star books weekly for the Reading Counts program.

Today reminder notices will go home from our librarian, Ms. Brown, regarding overdue books.  Please be punctual in returning books.
