We Are One: Growing in Christ

FCS Academic

Dear Parents,

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you at our Back-to-School Night this Tuesday. It begins at 7:00 PM in the FCS gym and then will continue in our classroom where I’ll share important information about our 5th/6th grade year.

HUME LAKE FOR 6TH GRADERS:

This year we will be going to Hume Lake for 6th grade camp October 14-18 to study Outdoor Education. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to be counselors for the week. Per Hume Lake policy, parents are welcome to visit campers during the 2 hour afternoon free time only. They may not attend classes or eat meals with the students.

PTF “UNDER THE STARS” WELCOME BACK MOVIE NIGHT:

  • Date: August 23
  • Time: Movie starts at 8:20 pm
  • Location: FCS football field
  • Popcorn and drinks will be provided

Come and enjoy our Fresno Christian family movie night and don’t forget to bring your blanket and enjoy “EPIC” the movie!

A NOTE FROM MRS. AINLEY ABOUT CHOIR UNIFORMS:

Parents, please check to see if you have any piece of the choir uniform at home. Last year’s uniform included a maroon skirt/skort, a maroon vest (boys), and a black bow tie (boys). Please send to school ASAP. Thank you.

WRITING:

Last week students completed a five paragraph essay about their summer vacation as an initial writing assessment. This week they will practice writing summary and opinion paragraphs about stories and books. This is in preparation for the 1st Quarter “Response to Literature” summative writing assessment.

READING:

This week I will begin a read aloud novel entitled, The Case That Time Forgot: The Sherlock Files, by Tracy Barrett, which ties into our Social Studies curriculum. Students are required to independently read one book of their choice during the month of August and will write a “Response to Literature” for it, due at the end of the month.  Students need to bring a book to school each day to read during S.S.R.

MATH:

This week we will continue our study of place value (millionths to billions), rounding, expanded form, and adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals. Students will utilize the online Khan Academy program to practice and reinforce concepts.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

This week we will continue our study of archaeology. Students will participate in a mini-dig and uncover clues about particular cultures from the artifacts they find. There will be a matching word to definition test on the following terms this Friday, August 23:

archeology, archaeologist, tell, survey, field, balk, sherd, top plan, excavation, artifact, stratigraphy, stratum, typology, inscription, ostracon, stele, cistern

BIBLE:

This week we will begin our study of the Bible, focusing on the Writings in the Pentateuch and Books of History. Writers and scribes played a key role in writing down the biblical story through the genres of narratives, lists, poems, and genealogy. This story is also our story.

BIBLE MEMORY VERSE:

The memory verse for this week is Ephesians 4:16 and the test will be this Friday, August 23. Students will be graded on writing the verse accurately, including correct wording, spelling, grammar and the scripture reference.

He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.  Ephesians 4:16
