We Are One: Growing in Christ
AUCTION BASKET:
Our class is putting together a sports-themed basket for the auction in March. If you would like to donate an item, please bring it to the classroom by February 28th. Your child will get credit for any donation you bring. If you have any questions, please call Tara Luginbill at (559)213-8491. Suggestions for basket items: football, baseball, basketball, bat, soccer ball, baseball mitt. I will publish in the newsletter all donations brought in so we can avoid duplicates.
VALENTINE’S PARTY:
This Friday is Valentine’s Day and the students have voted to exchange valentines. Families may bring treats to share if they wish. I will provide drinks, napkins and plates. Here are the names of all Vander Kooi’s Joys: Kylie, Izabella, Angelica, Anthony, Lorenzo, Harman, Megan, Shauna, Logan, Anjeli, Mitchell, Faith, Max, Morgan, Matthew, Hunter, Janae, Vijay, Marin, Toryn, Hannah, Jayden.
CANDY GRAMS:
We are nearing the end of our 2013/14 Box Tops for Education promotion. There is one more Friday left to turn in Box Tops. The last day to hand in Box Tops is Friday, February 14. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive we will be having a class contest. The class bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize.” Thank you for supporting Fresno Christian Schools.
EGYPTIAN MUSEUM FIELD TRIP:
All 5th/6th grade classes are preparing for an adventure to the largest Egyptian Museum in the Western World. We will tour the museum in San Jose with an experienced docent. Our tour includes an Introduction, Gallery Walk, and Tomb Tour.
Expedition Date: Friday, March 7, 2014
Time: 7:45 am – 5:30 pm
Where: Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, San Jose, CA.
School Tours: www.egyptianmuseum.org
The museum allows one chaperone per seven students. This provides our three classes with the opportunity to take two chaperones per class. Thank you to Mrs. Grimmius and Mrs. Monroy who will chaperone the Vander Kooi Joys on the field trip.
Students will write fictional narratives during the third quarter, focusing on story elements such as characters, setting, villain, conflict, rising action, climax and resolution. This week we begin writing the Young Authors fictional narrative stories.
READING:
The required reading for the month of February is realistic fiction. The writing response will be “Add a Chapter,” (instead of Write aLetter as previously printed). Students will extend the story, writing about what might happen next. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework.
MATH:
The 5th grade has begun Chapter 6: Data, Statistics and Probability, and the 6th grade will continue Chapter 5: Integers and Rational Numbers.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We begin our study of Ancient Greece this week. Students are encouraged to watch the Winter Olympics in preparation for our class Olympic competitions.
BIBLE: We continue Unit 5 which focuses on Gospel Writings: Jesus’ Ministry.
BIBLE MEMORY VERSE:
The memory verse for this week is 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and the test will be this Friday, February 14. Students will be graded on writing the verse accurately, including correct wording, spelling, grammar, punctuation and the scripture reference.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
SPELLING: Lesson 21 test will be on Friday, February 14.
