FCS Academic

Dear Parents,

I hope you had a relaxing long weekend with your families. Now it’s time to look ahead to parent conferences. Your child will bring home a conference sheet on Tuesday, September 3, listing the day and time of your conference with me. Please contact Kerry Roberts in the office to reschedule if the time allotted to you is inconvenient.

Grandparents’ Day is on Friday, September 13th.  A shuttle service will be available  from parking lots “A” and “F”  to transport grandparents to the Peoples Courtyard. HUME LAKE FOR 6TH GRADERS:

This year we will be going to Hume Lake for 6th grade camp October 14-18 to study Outdoor Education. Parents, you should be receiving an email from Hume Camp some time this week. Please respond to it as soon as possible.

WRITING:

This week students will continue to write opinion paragraphs about stories and books. This is in preparation for the 1st Quarter “Response to Literature” summative writing assessment.

READING:

We are just now practicing the opinion portion of the Response to Literature, so I’ve revised the requirements for the independently read August book. Students are to design a book cover listing the title and author on the front, illustrating the main character(s) and setting on the front, and printing a summary of the book on the back. The new due date is Friday, September 6th.  Students will read a book from a different genre each month. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum  of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework. The genre for the month of September is mystery. Students should show their selected mystery book to me for approval.

MATH:

The 5th grade will study comparing, ordering and rounding decimals and whole numbers, and the 6th grade will study multiplying and dividing decimals and whole numbers. Students will utilize the online Khan Academy program to practice and reinforce concepts.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

This week we continue our study of ancient Mesopotamia by completing a web quest. Students will learn all about this ancient civilization by utilizing the ducksters.com website.

BIBLE:

This week we continue our study of the Bible, focusing on the Writings in the Pentateuch and Books of History.

BIBLE MEMORY VERSE:

The memory verse for this week is Romans 6:23 and the test will be this Friday, September 6. Students will be graded on writing the verse accurately, including correct wording, spelling, grammar and the scripture reference.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.        Romans 6:23
